Barrages et centrales électriques hydrauliques Résumé : This work describes the main hydraulic features of vortex dropshafts along with some examples of their mis-designs and consequent malfunction. Laboratory experiments were conducted to test the hydraulic performance of subcritical vortex intakes using supercritical approach flow design basis. The purposes of these drop structures are to: (i) convey the storm runoff towards the sea through the existing sewer system located at lower elevations and (ii) by-pass insufficient sewers. The proper operation of these structures is crucial to prevent flooding and to guarantee the urban safety. This issue is particularly relevant for the sewer system of Naples (Italy), which is strongly constrained by its hilly landscape. Several drop structures were realized to connect the modern urban drainage system to the early sewer mains located at the sea level. This work intends to highlight practical issues to enhance the existing vortex dropshafts, with possible applications to other cases similar to the Neapolitan context.

Barrages et centrales électriques hydrauliques Résumé : An experimental investigation to predict the characteristics of scour vortices related to the scour depth of caisson piers was conducted. Two median size sediments were used as bed materials. Three types of piers, namely a cylindrical pier, a cylindrical pier with a caisson, and a nose pier were considered. The size and the rotational speed of the primary vortex were measured and correlated to the flow and pier parameters. The vortex power available to scour the sediment is related to the power provided by the vortex in the scour process. The equilibrium scour depth was predicted based on the concept of power available in the primary scour vortex equal to the resisting power of sediment in the scour hole. The prediction of the scour depth agrees well with literature data.

Barrages et centrales électriques hydrauliques Résumé : Particle image velocimetry (PIV) using fluorescent tracer particles has been used to measure the velocity field of the fluid above self-formed vortex ripples in an oscillatory flow with suspended sediment. Measured velocities were used to find distributions of phase-averaged velocity and vorticity. Using the distributions, discrete vortices were then identified and tracked. Vortices that originated in the wakes of ripples were carried by the flow to adjacent ripples where they recombined with vortices being generated during the next half-cycle of the flow. Two possible states were observed for similar flow conditions, where vortex migration was either 0.9 or 1.5 ripple wavelengths before recombination. Evidence indicates that this may be the result of two possible ripple wavelengths: one that is approximately twice the flow amplitude, and one that is approximately 1.4 times the flow amplitude. The 2-D circulation strength of discrete vortices, defined as the integral of vorticity over the area of the vortex, was numerically estimated from PIV measurements. Maximum dimensionless values of circulation tend to increase as the Reynolds number of the oscillatory flow increases and to decrease as the mobility parameter (a dimensionless number that quantifies the sediment transport capacity of the oscillatory flow) increases. This is interpreted as an effect of enhanced dissipation of vorticity due to the presence of increasing concentrations of entrained sediment as the mobility number increases.

Barrages et centrales électriques hydrauliques Résumé : Water flow over short hydraulic transitions is usually modelled by the irrotational flow theory, for which the energy head remains constant over the entire flow domain. Velocity and pressure distributions are then obtained based on the stream and potential functions of the flow net. However, experimental evidence may dictate non-uniform energy profiles resulting either from vorticity, viscous effects, or both. For rapidly-varied flows, Hunter Rouse (1906–1996) proposed in the early 1930s the inviscid Euler flow equations. Most of the current curvilinear flow models, however, resort to irrotational flow. In this work, a generalized curvilinear method for real fluid flow is proposed. Based on the streamline vorticity equation, a practical approach is presented for inviscid, rotational flow. The model is verified by data pertaining to the free overfall and further tested with data on viscous flow in undular jumps, thereby resulting in good agreement.

Barrages et centrales électriques hydrauliques Résumé : Transverse or longitudinal movements of a water body are observed for flows along cavities, river embayments, groyne fields or harbours. They are significant for certain flow conditions and geometrical properties. To study the effect of large-scale roughness on banks, 36 geometries of axi-symmetric, rectangular cavities were investigated in a laboratory flume under subcritical, turbulent free surface flow conditions. Significant movements of the water body were detected. The frequency of these periodic movements, identified by level and velocity observations, is in agreement with the natural frequency of the water body in a rectangular basin assuming the first-order mode of sloshing. Major movements of the water body, which lead to significant and periodic oscillations of the water surface, are avoided by excluding Strouhal numbers near 0.42 and 0.84. For low aspect cavity ratios, the periodic water-surface oscillations are insignificant if the flow reattaches to the sidewalls of the widened channel reach.
