This thesis attempts to look at the effect of uncertainty in demand on vehicle fleet size in road haulage industry.
Other effects of parameters such as distance, demand and hire rates on fleet size are also considered. A method for assessing the effect of uncertainty in demand on fleet size is developed. This is carroed out by writing a computer order size simulation program and a vehicle cost model. Two methods of operation in physical distribution are compared: the single drop operation and the multi-drop operation. The thesis shows that the assessment of the effect of uncertainty can be achieved in meaningful way. |
