3D printing technology has begun revolutionizing the construction industry in recent years. This thesis explores the emerging role of 3D printing in construction and analyzes its impacts on supply chains and processes. The thesis provides an overview of current 3D printing technologies, materials, robotics, and real-world applications in building and construction. The different methods and materials used in 3D printing are examined, with a focus on printing concrete structures.
A comparative analysis is conducted on 3D printing versus conventional construction for a 64 square meter single story villa. This simulation demonstrates potential time, cost and labor reductions. Broader implications are discussed including impacts on supply chains, logistics, workforce dynamics, sustainability, and the integration of 3D printing in Building Information Modeling (BIM) environments. The findings illustrate that 3D printing in construction holds advantages over conventional building methods in many regards, but adoption is still in early phases. As the technology develops further, 3D printing is poised to transform construction supply chains by enabling greater automation, customization, and optimization. This has the potential to greatly enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability in the construction industry. |
