The design method for VSI to track desired reference currents smoothly, is illustrated. By using the proposed method, it is possible to design the passive components of different VSI topologies used for load compensation. The results are supported by detailed simulation studies on a three-phase four-wire compensated system using PSCAD 4.2.1. The design steps are also verified by conducting experiments using a prototype model developed in the laboratory. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper deals with the hardware implementation of a shunt active filter (SAF) for compensation of reactive power, unbalanced loading, and harmonic currents. SAF is controlled using an adaptive-linear-element (Adaline)-based current estimator to maintain sinusoidal and unity-power-factor source currents. Three-phase load currents are sensed, and using least mean square (LMS) algorithm-based Adaline, online calculation of weights is performed and these weights are multiplied by the unit vector templates, which give the fundamental-frequency real component of load currents. The dc bus voltage of voltage source converter (VSC) working as a SAF is maintained at constant value using a proportional-integral controller. The switching of VSC is performed using hysteresis-based pulsewidth-modulation indirect-current-control scheme, which controls the source currents to follow the derived reference source currents. The practical implementation of the SAF is realized using dSPACE DS1104 R&D controller having TMS320F240 as a slave DSP. The MATLAB-based simulation results and implementation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SAF with Adaline-based control for load compensation. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents the design and implementation of a linear quadratic regulator (LQR) with integral action (LQRI) for a three-phase three-wire shunt active filter (SAF). The integral action is added so as to cancel the steady-state errors for reference tracking or disturbance rejection, knowing that the standard LQR provides only proportional gains. The controller is designed to achieve DC bus voltage regulation and harmonics and reactive power compensation. The converter model is set in the d-q rotating reference frame. The latter is augmented with the integral of the q component of the SAF currents and DC bus voltage to achieve integral action. The controller's performance depends on the weighting matrix, which is chosen to ensure satisfactory response. The converter is controlled as a whole, i.e., a multi-input-multioutput system and a fixed pulsewidth modulation at 10 kHz is used to generate the gating signals of the power devices. The system is tested for harmonics, reactive power, and load unbalance compensation for balanced/unbalanced loads. The experimental results obtained with a digital signal processor-based implementation of the controller on the DS1104 of dSPACE show good performance in terms of DC bus voltage regulation (small overshoot and very fast time response) and a low total harmonic distortion of AC line currents. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : Selective harmonic cancellation has become of primary importance in a wide range of power electronics applications, for example, uninterrupted power systems, regenerative converters, and active power filters (APFs). In such applications, the primary objectives are an accurate cancellation of selected harmonics and a quick speed of response under transients. This paper provides a novel signal-processing algorithm for selective harmonic identification based on heterodyning, moving average finite-impulse response filters, and phase-locked loop (PLL). The algorithm is applied over the current of a nonlinear load in the feedforward-based control of an APF. The PLL tracks the phase and frequency of the fundamental component. Then, the fundamental phase is multiplied by the order of the selected harmonic, and two random unitary orthogonal "axis waves" are generated. These unitary waves, rotating at the harmonic frequency, are multiplied by the input load current, thereby "moving" the Fourier series coefficients of the selected harmonic to DC (heterodyning). Moving average FIR filters are used to filter the harmonics generated in the heterodyning process from the DC signal; moving average FIR filters are very suitable for most of the power quality applications, thanks to their "comb-type" frequency response and their quick transient response. Experimental results confirm good performance for steady-state harmonic cancellation and an optimal system response to load transients. The theory of the algorithm has been developed for single- and three-phase systems. Multiobjective optimization models for PPF and HAPF were constructed. Detuning effects and faults were also considered by constructing constraints during the optimal process, which improved the reliability and practicability of the designed filters. An effective strategy was adopted to solve the multiobjective optimization problems for the designs of PPF and HAPF. Furthermore, the particle swarm optimization algorithm was developed for searching an optimal solution of planning of filters. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a new calculation method to obtain the reference currents for a selective shunt active power compensator (APC) with the capability of distinguishing between selective and global operating modes. This selective compensation operation is done through an identification of the current terms related to the physical phenomena that exist in electrical systems following a new equivalent conductance concept. Through this identification, this paper proposes the adequate set of reference currents that, used by a shunt APC (SAPC), achieve the selective cancellation of a desired nonefficient phenomenon. Furthermore, by combining the different current terms, it is possible to derive the sets of reference currents that allow the cancellation of a desired combination of nonefficient phenomena. By using these reference currents, a selective compensation feature is added to the SAPC control. An SAPC based on a three-phase three-leg inverter with a split dc bus has been implemented. The neutral wire of the electrical installation is connected to the midpoint of the dc bus, so the selective SAPC is able to work in four-wire electrical systems. The experimental results obtained demonstrate that the proposed selective compensation properly works in three-phase electrical systems with load-current unbalances, voltage asymmetries, and harmonic components. The electric quality is improved with the use of the proposed selective control based on this new equivalent conductance approach. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : A novel algorithm for fundamental frequency and harmonic components detection is presented in this paper. The technique is based on a real-time implementation of discrete Fourier transform, and it allows fast and accurate estimation of fundamental frequency and harmonics of a distorted signal with variable fundamental frequency. It is suitable for active shunt filter applications, when fast and accurate tracking of the reference signal is required to achieve a good control performance. The main application for the algorithm is aircraft ac power systems, where the fundamental frequency can be either fixed on 400 Hz and its actual value fluctuates around the nominal value, or variable in the range 360-900 Hz. Hence, a real-time estimation of fundamental frequency is essential for active filter control. The proposed algorithm has been at first implemented in Matlab/Simulink for computer simulation, and it has been compared with a Phase Locked Loop (PLL) algorithm for frequency detection and the synchronous dq reference method for harmonic detection. Experimental tests have been carried out in order to validate the simulation results. The distorted current absorbed by a nonlinear load is analyzed and processed by means of a digital implementation of the algorithm running on the active shunt power filter control DSP, in order to calculate the active filter compensating current. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper deals with the problem of reactive power and harmonics in a standard medium-voltage (MV) distribution network. It proposes a simple and inexpensive solution to enhance power quality when a particular connection to the high-voltage transmission network is required. It presents the design of a hybrid active filter topology connected to the MV level of a power distribution system. Its main task is to regulate a 132-kV voltage level. Reconfiguration of the power delivery network imposes new constraints in a distribution substation so that the reactive compensation should be increased. The topology of a shunt hybrid active filter is analyzed. It is built with the series connection of a passive filter and a low-rated active filter. The proposed filter is directly connected to a 13.8-kV level with no need of a step-down transformer. The possibility of different levels of reactive power compensation is implemented. The proposal shows very good performance for different load demands. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper proposes a method for optimization of the harmonic performance of converters under space vector modulation (SVM) control. It is shown that SVM provides a number of degrees of freedom, which make it suitable for optimization, subject to desired constraints. An objective function is defined, which seeks to minimize the most significant harmonic components of the generated waveform while keeping other harmonic components within the acceptable range outlined in the available standards. Since the formulation of the problem involves both real and integer variables, specialized optimization methods capable of handling mixed-integer variables need to be employed, and hence, a genetic algorithm optimizer is used to solve the optimization problem. Optimized SVM sequences obtained for various operating points under different sampling frequencies are shown to result in significant reduction of dominant harmonics while maintaining the waveform quality within prescribed limits. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a nonlinear control technique for a three-phase shunt hybrid power filter (SHPF) to enhance its dynamic response when it is used to compensate for harmonic currents and reactive power. The dynamic model of the SHPF system is first elaborated in the stationary ldquoabcrdquo reference frame and then transformed into the synchronous orthogonal ldquodqrdquo reference frame. The ldquodqrdquo frame model is divided into two separate loops, namely, the two current dynamic inner loops and the dc-voltage dynamic outer loop. Proportional-integral (PI) controllers are utilized to control the SHPF input currents and dc-bus voltage. The currents track closely their references so that the SHPF behaves as a quasi-ideal current source connected in parallel with the load. It provides the reactive power and harmonic currents required by the nonlinear load, thereby achieving sinusoidal supply currents in phase with supply voltages under dynamic and steady-state conditions. The SHPF consists of a small-rating voltage-source inverter (VSI) in series with a fifth-harmonic tuned LC passive filter. The rating of the VSI in the SHPF system is much smaller than that in the conventional shunt active power filter because the passive filter takes care of the major burden of compensation. The effectiveness of the control technique is demonstrated through simulation and experimentation under steady-state and dynamic operating conditions. In this paper, the mathematical model of the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) current, including the parasitic capacitance in LCD panel, is conducted to explore the influence of leakage current effect. Moreover, the primary-side control and the DPLL function are integrated to form a feedback mechanism to track the optimal operating frequency. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a hardware realization of an adaptive fuzzy controller (AFC) for a permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) drive system based on the field-programmable gate-array (FPGA) technology. First, a mathematics model of the PMLSM drive is defined; then, to increase the performance of the PMLSM drive system, an AFC constructed by a fuzzy basis function and a parameter-adjustable mechanism is applied to the position-control loop of the PMLSM drive system to cope with the effect of the system dynamic uncertainty and the external load. A point-to-point (PTP) motion trajectory designed with the trapezoidal velocity profile is considered to smooth the move of the PMLSM at the start and stop conditions. Second, a finite-state machine (FSM) joined by a multiplier, an adder, a lookup table, and some comparators and registers is presented to model the overall AFC, and a VHSIC hardware description language is adopted to describe the circuit of the FSM. In addition, a Nios II embedded processor is used to implement the function of the PTP motion-trajectory algorithm by software. Finally, an experimental system is established to verify the effectiveness of the proposed FPGA-based AFC and the PTP motion-control system, and some experimental results are confirmed theoretically. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : In this paper, a novel multiple-input-multiple-output network model entitled "infinite-mode networks" (IMNs) is explained. The model proposes a new and challenging design concept. It is a dual structure and combines neural networks (NNs) to linear models. It has mathematically clear input-output relationship as compared to NNs. The model has a desired embedded internal function, which roughly determines a route for the whole system to follow as DNA does for biological systems. By this model, infinitely many error dimensions can be defined, and each error converges to zero in a stable manner. The network outputs include logical combinations of infinite modes of reference states, which consequently result in a substantial improvement of the control system performance. In order to support the network theory, time-delay and noise-suppression experiments on a four-channel haptic bilateral teleoperation control system are analyzed. An analysis between NNs, sliding-mode NNs, and IMNs is introduced. Possible future applications of IMNs are discussed. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : There are many uncertainties and disturbances in the real dynamic system of a spherical stepper motor that make traditional control methods with lower precision, such as uncertain changes of magnetic field, load, and friction that generate speed ripple and deteriorate the 3-D tracking performance of the spherical motor system. In this paper, an available method is proposed to solve them by using neural networks (NNs) and a robust control scheme for improving the performance. First, a simplified torque calculation model based on finite-element method results can guarantee quick prediction of electromagnetic torque with lower error. Thus, the system model considering the friction, load, and disturbances is developed. Second, a robust NN (RNN) control scheme is presented to eliminate uncertainties to improve the tracking robust stability and overcome the undesired influence of uncertainties based on the nonlinear system dynamic model under continuous-trajectory tracking mode. Finally, as an example, the step-response and continuous-tracking processes of the motor using an RNN controller are simulated, and experiments, including the tracking using RNN proportional-differential control, are carried out to confirm the usefulness of the proposed control scheme. The simulation and experimental results of the proposed control scheme on the spherical stepper motor system demonstrate the effectiveness on satisfactory tracking performance. These plastic products are mostly manufactured using injection molding machines. The quality of plastic products depends on the injection force. Therefore, it is important to develop a fine force-control system. Generally, in force-control systems, the force information from the environment is detected by a force sensor. However, control systems using force sensors present problems related to signal noise, sensor cost, narrow bandwidth, and other factors. To overcome these problems, this paper presents a proposal for a new sensorless force-control method using a reaction torque observer. The injection molding machine, which uses a ball screw, has a resonance frequency that is affected by the torsion phenomenon. This new reaction torque observer considers the torsion phenomenon and friction phenomena. The newly proposed soft-switching dc-dc converter consists of a single-ended half-bridge inverter controlled by an asymmetrical pulsewidth-modulation scheme and a center-tapped diode rectifier. In order to attain the wide range of soft commutation under constant switching frequency, the single active edge-resonant snubber cell composed of a lossless inductor and a switched capacitor is employed for the half-bridge inverter leg, providing and assisting zero-current-switching operations in the switching power devices. The practical effectiveness of the proposed soft-switching dc-dc converter is demonstrated by the experimental results from an 800 W - 55 kHz prototype. In addition, the feasibility of the dc-dc converter topology is proved from the viewpoints of the high efficiency and high power density. Unlike the traditional buck-boost converter, this converter possesses fast transient responses, similar to the behavior of the buck converter with synchronous rectification. In addition, it possesses the non-pulsating output current, thereby not only decreasing the current stress on the output capacitor but also reducing the output voltage ripple. Furthermore, it has the positive output voltage, different from the negative output voltage of the traditional buck-boost converter. Above all, there are two types of KY buck-boost converters presented herein. In this paper, the basic operating principles of the proposed converters are first illustrated in detail, and second, some experimental results are offered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed topologies. The technique is based on geometrical considerations considering a unidimensional control region to determine the switching sequence and the corresponding switching times. In addition, a simple strategy to control the dc-voltage ratio between the H-bridges of the multilevel cascaded converter is presented. With the proposed approach, the importance density function in particle filter can be modified to represent posterior states by particle crowds in a better way. Thus, it makes the tracking system more robust to noise and outliers. On the other hand, because the particle interpretation is performed in a much more efficient fashion, the number of particles used in tracking is greatly reduced, which improves the real-time performances of the system. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : A novel and simple nonlinear logical torque-sharing function (TSF) for a switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive is proposed. This novel scheme using nonlinear TSF manipulates currents in two adjacent phases during commutation, so that efficiency and torque ripple in an SRM drive can be considerably improved. For constant torque generation, the switching of one-phase windings is regulated, and torque reference for the other phase stays at the previous state under the condition of a certain current limit given by the overall drive power rating. Every torque state monitored by the nonlinear logical condition determines a regulated or nonregulated torque control among two phases overlapped in commutation region, where one phase is incoming to produce the majority of torque and the outgoing current in the other phase is decreasingly controlled by the logical condition. Due to the same switching state in a nonregulated phase and the reduction of commutation period by the proposed control method, the switching number can be significantly reduced, and hence, the switching loss can be reduced. In case that one-phase regulation cannot satisfy a proper torque reference required for minimum torque ripple operation, a two-phase regulation mode is employed in the novel nonlinear TSF. In order to include magnetic nonlinearity in torque control and decrease a current tail at the end of commutation, the current of the incoming phase needs to be controlled in an increasing manner, and at the same time, the outgoing phase current tracks on an opposite direction so that torque sharing between two phases can be smoothly achieved with a minimum current crossover. The proposed control scheme is verified by some computer simulations and experimental results. It is applied to a vector-controlled induction motor drive and is experimentally verified. The new technique uses an artificial neural network (NN) as a rotor flux observer to replace the conventional voltage model. This makes the reference model free of pure integration and less sensitive to stator resistance variations. This is a radically different way of applying NNs to MRAS schemes. The data for training the NN are obtained from experimental measurements based on the current model avoiding voltage and flux sensors. This has the advantage of considering all drive nonlinearities. Both open- and closed-loop sensorless operations for the new scheme are investigated and compared with the conventional MRAS speed observer. The experimental results show great improvement in the speed estimation performance for open- and closed-loop operations, including zero speed. Residential and commercial appliances such as refrigerators and air conditioning systems use conventional motor drive technology. The machines found in these applications are characterized by low efficiency and high maintenance. A brushless dc (BLDC) motor drive is characterized by higher efficiency, lower maintenance, and higher cost. In a market driven by profit margins, the appliance industry is reluctant to replace the conventional motor drives with the advanced motor drives (BLDC) due to their higher cost. Therefore, it is necessary to have a low-cost but effective BLDC motor controller. This paper lays the groundwork for the development of a new low-cost IC for control of BLDC motors. A simple novel digital pulsewidth-modulation control has been implemented for a trapezoidal BLDC motor drive system. Due to the simplistic nature of this control, it has the potential to be implemented in a low-cost application-specific integrated circuit. The novel controller is modeled and verified using simulations. Experimental verification is carried out using field-programmable gate arrays to validate the claims presented. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : Considering the variations of inertia in real applications, an adaptive control scheme for the permanent-magnet synchronous motor speed-regulation system is proposed in this paper. First, a composite control method, i.e., the extended-state-observer (ESO)-based control method, is employed to ensure the performance of the closed-loop system. The ESO can estimate both the states and the disturbances simultaneously so that the composite speed controller can have a corresponding part to compensate for the disturbances. Then, considering the case of variations of load inertia, an adaptive control scheme is developed by analyzing the control performance relationship between the feedforward compensation gain and the system inertia. By using inertia identification techniques, a fuzzy-inferencer-based supervisor is designed to automatically tune the feedforward compensation gain according to the identified inertia. Simulation and experimental results both show that the proposed method achieves a better speed response in the presence of inertia variations. Using multiple primary coils in parallel has advantages over a single primary coil. First, the reduced inductance of the transmitting coils makes the amplifier less sensitive to component variations. Second, with multiple receiving coils, the power delivery to an individual receiver is less sensitive to changes in the loads attached to other coils. By using a 16 cm by 18 cm primary and a 6 cm by 8 cm secondary coil, going from a 1:2 coupling to a 2:2 coupling, we show an increase in received power from 1.8 to 9.5 W, with only a small change in coupling efficiency. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper summarizes the test results on several large-scale lighting systems based on a range of high-intensity-discharge (HID) lamps. The study focuses on the energy-saving, energy-efficiency, and dimming characteristics of magnetic-ballast-driven HID lamp systems that are suitable for public lighting networks. A central energy-saving unit that can change the input mains voltage of 220 V to a variable voltage within the range from 220 to 170 V is used to control a large lighting network. This central dimming unit offers a new freedom for users to use lighting energy when and where it is needed and to an appropriate power level. Lamp characteristics under full and reduced voltage operation for six types of HID lamps have been measured. Six large-scaled networks of ballast-lamp sets have been set up and dimmed with a central energy-saving unit with a rated power of 13.2 kVA per phase. The full load current under test was set at about 40 A per phase. The loss of the energy-saving unit on a per-lamp-set basis was measured at different voltage levels. It is found that the energy-saving unit can reduce overall system power at least 40% without causing lamp flickering. Through the controllable voltage range, there is no obvious change in color temperature. The lamp power and light output decrease almost linearly with input voltage within the range from 170 to 220 V, and the power loss of the energy-saving unit is less than 2.4% of the full power in all tests. For these large-scaled lighting networks, it is envisaged that 25%-35% of energy saving can be achieved in large public lighting applications. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents the various configurations of a multilevel modular capacitor-clamped converter (MMCCC), and it reveals many useful and new formations of the original MMCCC for transferring power in either an isolated or nonisolated manner. The various features of the original MMCCC circuit are best suited for a multibus system in future plug-in hybrid or fuel-cell-powered vehicles' drive train. The original MMCCC is capable of bidirectional power transfer using multilevel modular structure with capacitor-clamped topology. It has a nonisolated structure, and it offers very high efficiency even at partial loads. This circuit was modified to integrate single or multiple high-frequency transformers by using the intermediate voltage nodes of the converter. On the other hand, a special formation of the MMCCC can exhibit dc outputs offering limited isolation without using any isolation transformer. This modified version can produce a high conversion ratio from a limited number of components and has several useful applications in providing power to multiple low-voltage loads in a hybrid or electric automobile. This paper will investigate the origin of generating ac outputs from the MMCCC and shows how the transformer-free version can be modified to create limited isolation from the circuit. In addition, this paper will compare various modified forms of the MMCCC topology with existing dc-dc converter circuits from compactness and component utilization perspectives. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a new nonisolated asymmetrical buck voltage regulator module. A transformer is used to extend the extremely low duty cycle of a conventional buck converter. Turn-off losses can be significantly reduced due to the extension of duty cycle, and there are no turn-on losses owing to the zero-voltage turn-on condition. At the same time, the voltage stress over the synchronous rectifier MOSFETs is also reduced. Therefore, the reverse-recovery losses of the body diode can be reduced. Furthermore, the MOSFETs with lower voltage rating and lower RDS(on) can be used to reduce the conduction losses. In order to reduce the turn-off losses above the switching frequency of 1 MHz further, a new current-source driver is also proposed, which is suitable to this new topology. A 12-V input prototype with the switching frequency of 1 MHz was implemented. Simulation and experimental results verify the functionality and benefits of the proposed topology. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : Domestic induction cookers operation is based on a resonant inverter which supplies medium-frequency currents (20-100 kHz) to an inductor, which heats up the pan. The variable load that is inherent to this application requires the use of a reliable and load-adaptive control algorithm. In addition, a wide output power range is required to get a satisfactory user performance. In this paper, a control algorithm to cover the variety of loads and the output power range is proposed. The main design criteria are efficiency, power balance, acoustic noise, flicker emissions, and user performance. As a result of the analysis, frequency limit and power level limit algorithms are proposed based on square wave and pulse density modulations. These have been implemented in a field-programmable gate array, including output power feedback and mains-voltage zero-cross-detection circuitry. An experimental verification has been performed using a commercial induction heating inverter. This provides a convenient experimental test bench to analyze the viability of the proposed algorithm. The approach is based on an outer voltage loop, an inner current loop, and a resonant selective harmonic compensator. The design of the control parameters is carried out using conventional linear techniques (analysis of loop gain and other disturbance-rejection transfer functions). The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated and compared with two reference controllers: a basic control and an advanced repetitive control. In comparison with these controllers, the proposed control scheme provides additional attenuation to the harmonics coming from the load current, the grid voltage, and the reference signal, resulting in a grid current with lower harmonic distortion. Experimental results are reported in order to validate this paper. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a single-phase shunt active power filter (APF) for current harmonic compensation based on neural filtering. The shunt active filter, realized by a current-controlled inverter, has been used to compensate a nonlinear current load by receiving its reference from a neural adaptive notch filter. This is a recursive notch filter for the fundamental grid frequency (50 Hz) and is based on the use of a linear adaptive neuron (ADALINE). The filter's parameters are made adaptive with respect to the grid frequency fluctuations. A phase-locked loop system is used to extract the fundamental component from the coupling point voltage and to estimate the actual grid frequency. The current control of the inverter has been performed by a multiresonant controller. The estimated grid frequency is fed to the neural adaptive filter and to the multiresonant controller. In this way, the inverter creates a current equal in amplitude and opposite in sign to the load harmonic current, thus producing an almost sinusoidal grid current. An automatic tuning of the multiresonant controller is implemented, which recognizes the largest three harmonics of the load current to be compensated by the APF. The stability analysis of the proposed control system is shown. The methodology has been applied in numerical simulations and experimentally to a properly devised test setup, also in comparison with the classic sinusoidal current control based on the P-Q theory. This paper proposes transformerless dc-dc converters to achieve high step-up voltage gain without an extremely high duty ratio. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : This paper presents a dual-buck full-bridge inverter (DBFBI) to solve the shoot-through problem in conventional bridge-type inverters and reduce the voltage stress of the power device in the dual-buck half-bridge inverter (DBHBI). Hysteresis current control is used in the DBFBI. All switches and diodes operate at each half line cycle, and the freewheeling current flows through the independent freewheeling diodes instead of the body diodes of the switches, so the efficiency can be increased potentially. As the shoot-through problem does not exist in the DBFBI, dead time between the switches need not be set. The input-voltage utilization rate of the DBFBI is twice that of the DBHBI under the same output-voltage condition, i.e., the voltage stress of the power device in DBFBI is half that in the DBHBI. The operating principle, stability and relative stability analyses, and design guidelines and example are provided. Experimental results of a 1-kVA DBFBI verify the theoretical analysis. The comparisons among other inverters and the DBFBI show that the proposed inverter is very promising in 220-240-Vrms output-voltage and high-reliability applications, such as uninterruptible power supplies and grid-connected inverters. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : Since natural distribution power generation systems such as wind energy contain electric power fluctuation, flywheel energy storage (FWES) equipment for power compensation is used. Fuzzy-logic-based V/f control of the induction motor is proposed for the speed sensorless power-leveling system in this paper. Only two sensors, including one DC voltage sensor and one DC current sensor, are utilized. The flywheel is composed of two modes, namely, the speed picking-up control mode and the power control mode. According to the DC-link average current of an inverter, the rotating speed of the flywheel in the speed picking-up control mode is detected by regulating the output frequency and the output voltage based on fuzzy logic control. The power control mode consists of the outer voltage loop and the inner current loop. Although the outer loop is also realized by fuzzy logic control, the inner loop is the key object in this paper, i.e., the proportional and integral gains of a proportional-integral regulator are optimized by means of fuzzy logic reasoning for the purpose of the reliability and rapid response of leveling power. The experiments are carried out with the FWES equipment of 40-kJ energy, and the results verify that the proposed method is reliable, and better dynamic and static performance is demonstrated. A control structure consists of a feedforward ANN that approximates the manipulator's inverse dynamical model, an ANN feedback control law, a reference model, and the adaptation process of the ANNs with a variable learning rate. A supervisor that adapts the neural network's learning rate and a rule-based supervisor for online adaptation of the parameters of the reference model are proposed to maintain the stability of the system for large variations of load parameters. Simulation results highlight the performance of the controller to compensate the nonlinear friction terms, particularly Coulomb friction, and flexibility, and its robustness to the load and drive motor inertia parameter changes. Internal stability, which is a potential problem in such a system, is also verified. The controller is suitable for DSP and very large scale integration implementation and can be used to improve static and dynamic performances of electromechanical systems. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : The development of microrotational devices in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) has introduced a kind of ultrashort self-acting gas journal bearing with low length-to-diameter ratios. The bifurcation of ultrashort self-acting gas journal bearing-rotor systems is studied in this paper. The system is modeled as a rigid rotor supported by bearing forces as a result of gas viscosity and rotational speed. The spectral collection method is employed to discretize the nonlinear Reynolds equation describing the pressure distribution of the working fluid of the bearing. A system of nonlinear partial differential equations, which couples the fluid equation and the equations of the rotor motion, is presented and solved using the Runge-Kutta method. The bifurcation diagram, rotor center orbits, phase portraits, frequency spectra, and Poincare maps are utilized to analyze the dynamic characteristics of the rotor-bearing system for different operating conditions. The effects of the rotational speed and length-to-diameter ratio on the system dynamic behaviors are investigated with both low and high initial eccentricity ratios. The analyses show that the system exhibits complicated behaviors at low eccentricity ratios as a result of the self-excited whirl motion. For high eccentricity ratios, the bearing behavior comprises synchronous and subharmonic motions. A further understanding of the nonlinear dynamics of gas journal bearing in MEMS is given by the analysis results. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : Under a nonideal situation, the image quality may vary. As a result, the traditional iris recognition systems would not work well. However, these kinds of iris recognition systems have been widely deployed in law enforcement and homeland security. It will be desirable to transform the traditional systems to perform in nonideal situations without a costly update. In this paper, we propose a method that upgrades the traditional iris recognition system to work on nonideal situations. The proposed method takes into consideration not only the effect of image quality but also the segmentation accuracy. It employs video-based image-processing techniques to quickly identify and eliminate the bad quality images from iris videos for further processing. The proposed method is tested on public databases using in-house recognition algorithms and also evaluated using a commercialized system. The research results show that the proposed methods can be used to improve the performance of iris recognition systems in a nonideal situation. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : The objective of this paper is to present an online parameter tuning technique for digital power converters with predictive peak current-mode control operating in boundary conduction mode. The issues caused by both inductor variation and input voltage drift can be solved by the proposed online parameter tuning technique which is based upon the sampled currents between two pulsewidth modulation outputs. The proposed technique requires neither an additional sensor nor a system parameter. Furthermore, the effects of inductor variation and input voltage drift are analyzed. It will be demonstrated that the variation of the inductor and input voltage drift result in a dc offset of the inductor current and deteriorate the performance. It will be confirmed by experimental results that these effects can be coped with using the presented online parameter tuning technique. Experimental results derived from a field-programmable-gate-array-based digital controller will be presented to fully confirm the theoretical analysis. Tubes à électrons. Photocellules. Accélérateurs de particules. Tubes à rayons X Résumé : A digital peak voltage (DPV) predictive control for switching dc-dc converters is proposed and studied in this paper. With the predictive control technique, the duty ratio in each switching cycle is usually calculated and predicted based on the status in the previous switching cycles. Therefore, at least a one-switching-cycle time delay usually exists in predictivPe control, which significantly degrades the control performance of digital controlled switching dc-dc converters. To eliminate this time delay and to improve the control performance, an improved DPV (IDPV) predictive control technique is then proposed and studied. The control laws of DPV and IDPV with different pulsewidth modulations are derived, and their stabilities are analyzed. A simple digital slope compensation method is proposed to eliminate the subharmonic oscillation of DPV and IDPV control laws. The steady-state and transient performances of DPV and IDPV controlled buck converters are investigated by simulation and experiment. The comparison studies among DPV, IDPV, and digital peak current (DPC) control show that the transient performances of IDPV and DPV are much better than that of DPC and that IDPV is better than DPV. The aging of aluminum-electrolytic-capacitors is expressed by the increase of their equivalent series resistance (ESR) and the reduction of their capacitance. Thus, the proposed technique is based on the estimation of both the ESR and capacitance values. To implement the proposed technique, the capacitor is fed by a sinusoidal voltage with the required power. The resultant impedance vector defined by the capacitor voltage and current gives enough information to estimate the condition of the capacitor. The measurements were made at room temperature using a transient thermoreflectance technique. A three-layer model based on the transmission-line theory and the genetic algorithms were applied to obtain the TC of thin films and the interfacial thermal resistance (ITR). The results show that the value of the TC is 1.24-2.09 Wmiddotm-1middotK-1. The ITR between the metal layer and the thin film is about 1.2 times 10-8 m2 ldr K ldr W-1. The estimated uncertainty of the TC is less than 18%. The proposed controller anticipates the upcoming values of wheel slip and takes the necessary action to keep the wheel slip at the desired value. The performance of the control algorithm as applied to a quarter vehicle is evaluated through simulations and experimental studies that include sudden changes in road conditions. It is observed that the proposed controller is capable of achieving faster convergence and better noise response than the conventional approaches. It is concluded that the use of grey system theory, which has certain prediction capabilities, can be a viable alternative approach when the conventional control methods cannot meet the desired performance specifications. We propose a hardware architecture system using tiny neural networks (TNNs) specialized in image recognition. The generic TNN architecture allows for expandability by means of mapping several basic units (layers) and dynamic reconfiguration, depending on the application specific demands. One of the most important features of TNNs is their learning ability. Weight modification and architecture reconfiguration can be carried out at run-time. Our system performs objects identification by the interpretation of characteristics elements of their shapes. This is achieved by interconnecting several specialized TNNs. The results of several tests in different conditions are reported in this paper. The system accurately detects a test shape in most of the experiments performed. This paper also contains a detailed description of the system architecture and the processing steps. In order to validate the research, the system has been implemented and configured as a perceptron network with back-propagation learning, choosing as reference application the recognition of shapes. Simulation results show that this architecture has significant performance benefits.
