Supply-chain management has non-cooperative and cooperative interactions between the participating players. We provide a concise survey of cooperative inventory games in the form of extensions on two basic problems. For deterministic games, Economic Order Quantity-like policies with joint replenishment are of primary interest. For stochastic games we examine Newsvendor-like centralization games and their extensions. We conclude with a short summary of a dynamic Newsvendor realization game and directions for further research. Using two different types of relationship, namely a traditional system without any collaboration scheme and Collaborative Planning, Forecasting and Replenishment, we develop decision models describing the producer and the buyer planning processes. We also identify which approach is more profitable for each actor as well as for the network, based on real costs and parameters obtained from the industrial case. We then test how different incentives can improve the traditional system and provide higher gains for each partner. Our results show that using incentives increases the system's profit by up to 4% if parameters are well defined. Each team is capable of handling certain types of repairs and replacement jobs. The jobs are combined into a set of projects according to their locations and types. The timetable shows which project should be worked on by each team on a weekly basis throughout an entire year. Our objective is to design a schedule with minimum network disruption due to ongoing maintenance projects that require absolute curfew. Absolute curfew projects are those that cause complete closure of the rail traffic. For tackling this problem, we develop four optimization-based iterative algorithms. We also present very promising computational results obtained within a few minutes using data provided by a major North American railroad. Previous studies have focused on developing technology evaluation methods such as scorecard. However, technology credit rating is rarely applied, despite its convenient usage for technology financing. In this paper, we propose a technology credit rating system, called cross matrix, based on empirical data obtained from the technology scoring model and examine their properties. The proposed rating system is expected to provide valuable information for effective management of the technology credit fund. The DSS is built on five fundamental elements—materials, facilities, activities, storage areas, and time periods. It requires little direct knowledge of optimization techniques to be used effectively. Results based on real data from an aluminium company in India demonstrate significant potential for improvement in profits. Our objective is to maximize the total population serviced by two distinct stations within two different response time limits over a multi-period planning horizon. Our aim is to provide a backup station in case no ambulance is available in the closer station and to develop a strategic plan that spans multiple periods. In order to solve this problem, we propose a Tabu Search approach. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on randomly generated data. We also implement our approach to the case of Istanbul to determine the locations of EMS stations in the metropolitan area. This paper addresses two logistics problems associated with the hub-based support concept, namely, hub location optimization and aircraft routing problems. A discrete facility location model was developed to analyse the hub-based support effectiveness and to determine the optimal hub locations. An aircraft routing model was also developed to determine optimal aircraft routes for the movement of cargo and supplies from various support hubs to a theatre of operation. Both models were formulated using mixed integer nonlinear programming. Historical CF deployment and sustainment data were used to conduct the analysis and to illustrate the methodology. The study indicates that the hub-based support approach would offer potential cost avoidance on sustainment lift and could be an effective strategy for improvement of the CF's support capability. It also indicates that potential lift costs could be avoided through optimal routing of sustainment flights. In this paper, the problem of workforce turnover is examined in the context of three case study companies (two Chinese and one Singaporean), all being outsource suppliers of manufactured products with relatively similar cultural and environmental influences. The cost of turnover is examined through a simple costing model that includes the indirect effects of lower-output rate and increased scrap because of worker inexperience, as well as the well-recognised direct costs. In addition, the model used extends the costing analysis by recognising the multiplier impact on the value-added lost by this inexperience. Having established the significance of the cost of workforce turnover on the performance of the companies studied, company data were utilised to undertake an analysis of the causes of the turnover to be undertaken, bearing in mind the existing findings reported in Western case studies. While the core reasons for the workforce turnover in the factories studied are consistent with findings elsewhere in the world, the weightings of individual contributing factors vary. This understanding provides the foundations for the development of proactive programs to reduce the incidence of labour turnover in the Asian context, thereby leading to considerable cost savings and other competitive benefits. Standard mean-variance (MV) portfolio selection methods are not appropriate for portfolio rebalancing, as the initial portfolio, change in funding and transaction costs are not considered. A quadratic mixed integer programming portfolio rebalancing model, which takes account of these factors is developed in this paper. The transaction costs in this portfolio rebalancing model are composed of fixed charges and variable costs, including the market impact costs associated with large market trades of individual securities, where these variable transaction costs are assumed to be non-linear functions of traded value. The use of this model is demonstrated and it is shown that when initial portfolio, funding changes and transaction costs are taken into account in portfolio construction and rebalancing, MV efficient portfolios that include risk-free lending do not have the structure expected from portfolio theory. To solve the resulting MOO problem, a hybrid metaheuristic with two steps is proposed to find the Pareto set's solutions. First, a Record-to-Record Travel with an adaptive memory is used to find first non-dominated Pareto frontier solutions preemptively. Second, a Variable Neighbour Search technique with three transformation types is used to intensify every non dominated solution found in the first Pareto frontier to produce the final Pareto frontier solutions. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated by solving two nonlinear GP test problems and three engineering design problems. In all problems, multiple solutions to the GP problem are found in one single simulation run. The results prove that the proposed algorithm is robust, fast and simply structured, and manages to find high-quality solutions in short computational times by efficiently alternating search diversification and intensification using very few user-defined parameters. We formulate the buyers's decision problem as a mixed binary integer program, which is a generalization of the capacitated facility location problem (CFLP). A branch and bound (BnB) procedure using Lagrangean relaxation and subgradient optimization is developed for solving large-scale problems that can arise when suppliers’ discount schedules contain multiple price breaks. Results of computer trials on specially adapted large benchmark instances of the CFLP confirm that a sub-gradient optimization procedure based on Shor and Zhurbenko's r-algorithm, which employs a space dilation in the direction of the difference between two successive subgradients, can be used efficiently for solving the dual problem at any node of the BnB tree. However, within AHP, there are several competing preference measurement scales and aggregation techniques. In this paper, we compare these possibilities using a decision problem with an inherent trade-off between two criteria. A decision-maker has to choose among three alternatives: two extremes and one compromise. Six different measurement scales described previously in the literature and the new proposed logarithmic scale are considered for applying the additive and the multiplicative aggregation techniques. The results are compared with the standard consumer choice theory. We find that with the geometric and power scales a compromise is never selected when aggregation is additive and rarely when aggregation is multiplicative, while the logarithmic scale used with the multiplicative aggregation most often selects the compromise that is desirable by consumer choice theory. Moreover, in industry the focus has shifted from a pure logistics-oriented view towards the integration of pricing and revenue issues into cross-functional value chain planning models. This paper presents a practical decision support tool for global value chain planning in the production of chemical commodities. The proposed linear optimization model consists of various modules that reflect sales, distribution, production, and procurement activities within a company-internal value chain. The objective of the model is to maximize profit by coordinating all activities within the supply chain. The model formulation is related to a real industry case. It is shown how the model can be used to support decision making from sales to procurement by volume and value. Assuming that firms set the equilibrium prices in the second stage, the game is reduced to a location game for which a global minimizer of the social cost is a location equilibrium if demand is completely inelastic and marginal production cost is constant. The problem of social cost minimization is studied for both a network and a discrete location space. A node optimality property when the location space is a network is shown and an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) formulation is obtained to minimize the social cost. It is also shown that multiple location equilibria can be found if marginal delivered costs are equal for all competitors. Two ILP formulations are given to select one of such equilibria that take into account the aggregated profit and an equity criterion, respectively. An illustrative example with real data is solved and some conclusions are presented. The paper then focuses on one type of such problem, in which a vehicle breaks down during the delivery and a new routing solution needs to be quickly generated to minimise the costs. Two Tabu Search algorithms are developed to solve the problem and are assessed in relation to an exact algorithm. Also, the cost model of Banerjee and Rahim (1988) is used as the objective function, and the probability density function of the Burr distribution is applied to derive the statistical constraints of economic statistical design of the x-bar control charts for non-normal data. The example of Banerjee and Rahim (1988) is adopted to indicate the solution procedure and sensitivity analyses. Meanwhile, the design parameters of the x-bar control charts can be obtained through the grid search method. The results show that an increase of skewness coefficient (α3) results in a slight decrease for sample size (n), but is robust to the control limit width (L). Also, an increase of kurtosis coefficient (α4) leads to a wider control limit width. Finite mixture distributions have been successfully used by Ford Motor Company to model machine breakdown durations in simulation models of engine assembly lines. These models can be very complex, with a large number of machines. To simplify the modelling we propose a method of grouping machines with similar distributions of breakdown durations, which we call the Arrows Classification Method, where the Two-Sample Cramér-von-Mises statistic is used to measure the similarity of two sets of the data. We evaluate the classification procedure by comparing the throughput of a simulation model when run with mixture models fitted to individual machine breakdown durations; mixture models fitted to group breakdown durations; and raw data. Details of the methods and results of the classification will be presented, and demonstrated using an example. By simple linear deterioration, we mean that the processing time of a job is a simple linear function of its execution starting time and its deterioration rate. The objective is to find a schedule that minimizes total absolute differences in waiting times. We show that the optimal schedule is V-shaped: jobs are arranged in descending order of their deterioration rates if they are placed before the job with the smallest deterioration rate, but in ascending order of their deterioration rates if placed after it. We prove other several properties of an optimal schedule, and introduce two efficient heuristic algorithms that are tested against a lower bound. We also provide computational results to evaluate the performance of the heuristic algorithms. We prove other several properties of an optimal schedule, and introduce two efficient heuristic algorithms that are tested against a lower bound. We also provide computational results to evaluate the performance of the heuristic algorithms. A total of 40 indicators were initially selected for the efficiency evaluation, with 21 related to DEA-input indicators and 19 to DEA-output indicators. Eight representative indicators selected using GRA are subsequently used as the input and output indicators in the DEA analysis. The empirical result also shows that 10 out of 69 dot com firms are CCR-efficient in DEA Efficiency. One of the reasons is that current theorising is dominated by a paradigm mentality, preoccupied with wholesale philosophical legitimation. ‘Paradigm’ and the associated ‘incommensurability’ were once revolutionary heuristic tools; now they are mistaken for the basis of an essentialist foundation. The result is a stifling of intellectual innovation and a diminishing of practical relevance. For OR research to make a positive difference again, it is time to move beyond paradigm-based theorising. After paradigm, there are many opportunities. This paper explores a pragmatist alternative that is action-oriented, multiplicity-embracing, ethically concerned and politically sensitive. Incorporating ontological flexibility, it allows OR workers to enact multiple realities, craft ontology-in-use, weave available methods with situated particulars, justify methodologies based on practical consequences, so as to get jobs done and enhance competences. Promoting ontological flexibility and methodology-in-use is a useful starting point for after-paradigm theorising that supports innovative mixing-methodology practice. In this strategy, the route choice is made adaptively based on the real-time information of the whole system. An efficient optimization-based heuristic is proposed to support such real-time decision-making process. Numerical results show that our ARS outperforms both the static routing method and the original dynamic routing method.
