These studies have been published in a number of unrelated publishing outlets, which may hamper the widespread reference and use of such resources. In this paper, we analyse existing research in healthcare simulation in order to categorise and synthesise it in a meaningful manner. Hence, the aim of this paper is to conduct a review of the literature pertaining to simulation research within healthcare in order to ascertain its current development. A review of approximately 250 high-quality journal papers published between 1970 and 2007 on healthcare-related simulation research was conducted. The results present a classification of the healthcare publications according to the simulation techniques they employ; the impact of published literature in healthcare simulation; a report on demonstration and implementation of the studies’ results; the sources of funding; and the software used. Healthcare planners and researchers will benefit from this study by having ready access to an indicative article collection of simulation techniques applied to healthcare problems that are clustered under meaningful headings. This study facilitates the understanding of the potential of different simulation techniques in solving diverse healthcare problems. We argue that British MS/OR has developed a soft and systemic approach to MS/OR practice, which has resulted in the emergence of a number of interpretive and critical-oriented methodologies. American MS/OR practice has remained closed to the positivistic discourse. Using a set of keywords and authors’ names associated with the main features of the interpretive and critical MS discourses, we surveyed articles published in three major US MS/OR journals. We compare these results with trends in the UK MS/OR scene. Findings appear to confirm the different directions taken by the MS/OR practice across the Atlantic. The paper posits possible reasons underpinning these differences: firstly, the particular methodological path followed by the British MS/OR, from early ‘soft systems’ applications in the early 1970s to the now well-established ‘Problem Structuring Methods’; and secondly, continuous engagement between the systems and MS/OR British communities (a dialogue that seems not to have occurred in the US). The paper contributes to a reflection on the MS/OR historical developments and contrasts these developments in both countries, two areas of OR significantly under-researched. As a basis for our study a three-phase hierarchical approach is proposed. In the first phase a facility location problem is formulated and solved by means of a mixed integer linear programming; in the second phase a new integer programming formulation for the corresponding heterogeneous fleet vehicle routing problem is presented, and a savings-based heuristic algorithm is developed to efficiently solve the related collection routing problems; in the third phase a simulation study is performed on the collection routes in order to assess the overall performance of the recovery system. The results show a good performance of the proposed procedure, and an improved configuration of the recovery network compared to the one currently in use (particularly transportation costs are reduced by 29.2%). The tool considers personnel sustainability in terms of the dynamics of progression through career profiles and the requirements of the force to meet operational capability demands. It assists in analysing the ability of a force structure (current or future) to meet forecast operational deployments, providing insights into: likely problem areas with regard to sustainability, the effect of changing personnel policies, resource/cost implications and force expansion issues. Utilised in shorter-term planning, the tool allows for rapid force options testing and, in longer-term planning, for detailed sustainability analysis of proposed future force structures. The paper focuses on the basic construction of the model and its mathematical underpinnings, while giving insights into its utility and to how it has been applied. We determine a purchase and salvage policy for trucks and loaders, which minimises the cost of materials handling over a multiple period schedule. This problem becomes large scale when we consider large sets of equipment and long schedules. Pre-existing equipment can lead to heterogeneous fleets; non-uniformity in the operating cost function coupled with compatibility issues also adds to the complexity of the problem. We present an integer programme for this problem, where we introduce a specialised linear constraint set to ensure satisfaction of production requirements while accounting for equipment compatibility. Many aspects of the presented model, such as the consideration of multiple periods and pre-existing equipment, are novel for the mining industry and ensure that the model is both a new and advanced equipment selection tool. We propose a new approach based on the simulation of a large number of sampled weekly instances and the application of a previously developed optimization procedure for the daily dispatch of technicians. The sampled instances are derived from an extensive statistical analysis of demand data with respect to several key parameters. The results of the simulations are utilized to adjust performance curves in function of fleet size that are then used in an economic analysis of the trade-offs between service quality and cost. Efficient policies for fleet design are then deducted from this analysis. The TL routing problem (TRP) itself is hard, but the complexity of solving the problem increases due to the stochastic nature of TL demand. It is traditionally approached using single objective solution methodologies that range from linear programming to dynamic programming techniques. This paper presents a deterministic multiple objective formulation of the TRP. A ‘route algebra’ is developed to facilitate the solution procedure, paving the way for the use of goal programming and tabu search techniques. The output of these strategic alliances is usually sold by the individual ally company under its own brand and using its own marketing mix strategies. Marketing strategies create a cumulative effect that is reflected in brand value. Although horizontal alliances often have a significant overall impact on firm profitability, undesired brand value dilution is a worrisome possibility for the partners and therefore a relevant subject of study. In this paper, we consider brand value to be the economic added value of a brand, and propose two market-based measures of brand value: (1) price premia (which are relevant for a unit sale) and (2) revenue premia (which also account for the premia in sales volume). We apply this analysis to the Spanish market for new automobiles, in which successful and long-lasting horizontal alliances have formed. Our findings suggest that, during the introduction stage of the product life cycle, horizontal allies did not charge different price premia, but that horizontal allies profit from differences in brand reputation obtained from demand side effects such as revenue premia (specifically, the impact on sales volume). Consequently, horizontal cooperation among brands does not dilute their value at the introduction stage. Furthermore, our results suggest that horizontal allies do charge different price premia during the growth stage of the product life cycle. Consequently, horizontal allies have recognized strategies that do not dilute brand value in intense competition mitigating the brand value diluting risk. The authors argue that this theory (and associated models) is also useful for conflict prevention. It indicates the need to support people in discussing their differences before conflict arises. Potential conflicts can be reframed through dialogue focusing on values, and participative governance can institutionalise fair processes for making decisions in the absence of consensus. Some of the boundary critique models also support people in recognising and countering the systemic conditions that enable stereotyping, stigmatisation and the victimisation of minorities. The paper ends by presenting a new model that was originally developed to inform mediation practice, but also has implications for conflict prevention. This helps explain how different interpretations of a common concern arise, and suggests ways to improve mutual understanding between people and/or reframe the common concern in order to defuse a potential conflict. In this problem, there is no batch and the jobs enter and leave the machine one by one and continuously, which is different from general single machine batch scheduling problem where the jobs in a batch share the same start and departure time. Therefore, the start time and the departure time of a job depend on not only the job sequence but also the machine capacity. This problem is also different from the single semi-continuous batching machine scheduling recently studied in the literature, where the jobs are processed in batch mode and a new batch cannot be started for processing until the processing of the previous batch is completed though jobs in the same batch enter and leave the machine one by one. The objective of this problem is to minimize the makespan. We formulate this problem as a mixed integer linear programming model and propose a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm for this problem. Computational results on randomly generated instances show that the proposed PSO algorithm is effective. Most of the traditional models that are applied assume that customers buying a high-fare class ticket will not purchase a low-fare class ticket even if it is available. This is not a very realistic assumption and has led to revenue leakage due to customers exhibiting buy-down behaviour. This paper aims at devising a suitable incentive mechanism that would incite the customer to reveal his nature. This helps in reducing revenue leakage. We show that the proposed incentive mechanism is profitable to both the buyer and seller and hence ensures the buyers participation in the mechanism. Planners often assume that future operations would have staggered starts. This assumption makes the sequence in which the operations are executed consequential with respect to the levels of capabilities needed to meet requirements. Often, the most demanding sequence is determined by conducting a complete enumeration of all possible sequencing of the planning scenarios. The most stringent capability requirement so determined is then used for planning. This paper provides results of a simulation study that shows that it is possible to get a requirement specification that is adequate for over 92% of all future possibilities, using considerably fewer sequences based on orthogonal arrays (56 instead of 40 320 sequences in the case of eight planning scenarios). It also shows that, contrary to popular perception, staggering the starts of the operations does not necessarily lead to reduced requirements. One of these models is the DEAHP. The main drawback of the DEAHP is that it generates counter-intuitive priority vectors for inconsistent pairwise comparison matrices. To overcome the drawbacks of the DEAHP, this paper proposes a new procedure entitled Revised DEAHP, and it will be shown that this procedure generates logical weights that are consistent with the decision maker's judgements and is sensitive to changes in data of the pairwise comparison matrices. Through a numerical example, it will be shown that the Revised DEAHP not only produces correct weights for inconsistent matrices but also does not suffer from rank reversal when an irrelevant alternative is added or removed.
