Titre : New applications in radiographic evaluation of structural components Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Bohumil Kasal, Auteur ; Andrew Adams, Auteur ; Milos Drdacky, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : pp. 395-410 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Radiography Real time In-situ Strain Tomography Index. décimale : 624 Constructions du génie civil et du bâtiment. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : The real-time radiography permits studying component behavior under moderaterate loading and it is particularly suitable for timber structures since density differences must be present in order to detect individual components and features. Low density of wood permits using energy levels that are sufficiently low and do not require special safety measures. The sensitivity of the static equipment permits investigation of wood internal structure such as early and late wood or voids and internal defects. The disadvantage of the technique is in collapsing the three dimensional object into a two dimensional image, which may make the interpretation of results difficult. The focus of the paper is the possibilities in application of low-energy X-ray technology and this is demonstrated on several examples. Two promising applications are discussed: quantitative X-ray radioscopy and radiographic micro computer tomography. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : The reinforced concrete pillars of the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata at the San Carlo Borromeo hospital in Milan, designed by the architect Gio Ponti in the early Sixties, show signs of damage due to reinforcement corrosion. They require repair in order to remedy already present damage and also to prevent future propagation. The repair should also aim at preserving the integrity of the original materials, owing to the architectural and cultural value of the Church. The paper describes a trial work aimed at defining an appropriate procedure of restoration. Initially the pillars were inspected to assess their condition by means of non-destructive techniques and analyses on concrete samples. Then the effectiveness of two repair techniques, i.e. electrochemical realkalisation and hydrophobic treatment, was evaluated by comparison with non-treated areas. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : Industrial pavements often represent a critical issue in Civil Engineering. Shrinkage strain, excessive deflection, fatigue loading, incompatibility among different concrete layers are some common problems which may lead to an extensive damage in this type of structure. Such inconveniences usually involve quite large areas, calling for efficient Non-Destructive techniques in order to perform a thorough inspection of the pavement conditions. In this paper the impact-acoustic technique has been regarded as a method for detecting the delamination occurring under the abrasion-resistant top coating of concrete ground-slabs. The implementation via affordable tools for digital audio recording, the proper processing of the audio files and the procedure for drafting the damage maps are discussed in the paper with reference to the case study of a warehouse building. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : This paper addresses the theory for a statistical analysis of the results of potential mapping performed on reinforced concrete structures. The basic assumption for this analysis is that the distribution of potentials for both corroding and passive steel can be adequately described by a normal density distribution. This treatment is applied to a number of situations as to exemplify the calculation procedure. Eventually, this statistical analysis will result in improved potential criteria to distinguish corroding from passive steel reinforcement. Moreover, this procedure allows to assign to any value of the measured potential the corresponding probability to deal with an active corrosion process and provides a better estimate of the amount of corroding steel present in the structure. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : This paper deals with a solution for monitoring rigid 3-D displacements and deformations of 4 steel fibre RC innovative retaining structures designed for stabilizing unstable slopes. In particular, here the complete monitoring system is described, whilst results achieved during the placement of every structure are given. It includes the periodic use of a robotic total station to perform geodetic measurements during both placement and service stages, with different acquisition rates. The application of standard techniques of Engineering Geodesy resulted in over-estimating the precision of measurements, then an improved method to carry out this task was defined and applied. The monitoring system is completed by local strain sensors (load cells, vibrating wires and fibre optic sensors) which were tested in order to define a suitable configuration for assessing deformations. The obtained results showed that fibre optic sensors are much less influenced by temperature change with respect to vibrating wires. Titre : Radar-based measurement of deflections on bridges and large structures Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Carmelo Gentile, Auteur ; Giulia Bernardini, Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : pp. 495-516 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Bridge Microwave interferometry Remote sensing Radar Index. décimale : 624 Constructions du génie civil et du bâtiment. Infrastructures. Ouvrages en terres. Fondations. Tunnels. Ponts et charpentes Résumé : Recent progresses in radar techniques and systems have favoured the development of microwave interferometers, suitable to the non-contact measurement of deflections on large structures. The main characteristic of the new radar systems is the possibility of simultaneously measuring the static or dynamic deflection of several points on a large structure with high accuracy. The objectives of the paper are: a) to discuss some radar techniques implemented in the microwave interferometer, in order to highlight advantages and potential issues of the radar-based measurement; b) to illustrate the application of the radar technique in live-load static and ambient vibration tests performed on a full-scale bridge.
