By surveying a sample of the top MS/OR and systems journals, we assese the extent to which systemic management science methodologies developed recently have been used in tackling EM/S problems. Titles and abstracts EM/S applications published in MS/OR and systems journals between 1989 and 2009 were queried for the occurence of typical keywords associated with a set of SMs (eg, complexity theory, systems dynamics, soft systems, critical systems, viable systems model). The survey identifies a set of articles representing the practice of either a particular methodology or of a mixture of various SMs in EM/S setting. By assembling and critically reviewing a sample of applications in EM/S the paper hopes to raise awarness among environmentalists, oparational researchers and management scientists of the benefits of using systemic approches developed in MS/OR and, in this way, to encourage further exchange and conversation between these fields of management DEWEY : 001.424 ISSN : 0160-5682 [article] Management science methodologies in environmental management and sustainability : discourses and applications [texte imprimé] / Paucar-Caceres, A., Auteur ; Espinosa, A., Auteur . - 2011 . - pp. 1601-1620.

Titre : In search of contextual variables in a stochastic DEA framework : effect of regulation on efficiency of Indian cement industry Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Bandyopadhyay, B., Auteur Année de publication : 2011 Article en page(s) : pp. 1621–1637 Note générale : Recherche opérationnelle Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Non-parametric methods Efficiency Regulation Index. décimale : 001.424 Résumé : The paper assesses the difference in the nature of relationship between efficiency and its determinants of Indian cement producing firms in the presence and absence of environmental regulation. It provides an intuitive construct to identify the determinants of efficiency, which is followed by an empirical verification using a two-stage stochastic data envelopment analysis. Important quantitative determinants of efficiency include factor intensities of outputs, levels of pollution abatements, gross value added, whereas size, age, ownership type, development indicators of the place of location of a firm are among the qualitative determinants. An initial phase and a matured phase of regulation are considered in the paper. The main results suggest that capital intensity of output plays a positive role in increasing efficiency under regulation in the initial phase, material intensity in both phases and labour intensity, a negative role, in the subsequent phase. Higher levels of pollution abatements cause higher efficiency under regulation, while in the initial phase private firms report higher efficiencies under regulation; it is just the reverse in the subsequent phase. Size, age and development indicator of the state in which a firm is located can play a positive role to achieve higher efficiencies in the matured phase of regulation. This new methodology consists of two key components: an innovative evidence-driven decision modelling framework for representing and transforming large amounts of data sets and a generic reasoning-based decision support process for aggregating evidence to prioritize the voices of customer on the basis of the Evidential Reasoning (ER) approach. Methods and frameworks for data collection and representation via multiple customer satisfaction surveys were examined first and the distinctive features of quantitative and qualitative survey data are analysed. Several novel yet natural and pragmatic rule-based functions are then proposed to transform survey data systematically and consistently from different measurement scales to a common scale, with the original features and profiles of the data preserved in the transformation process. These new transformation functions are proposed to mimic expert judgement processes and designed to be sufficiently flexible and rigorous so that expert judgements and domain specific knowledge can be taken into account naturally, systematically and consistently in the transformation process. The ER approach is used for synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data under uncertainty that can be caused due to missing data and ambiguous survey questions. A new generic method is also proposed for ranking the voices of customer based on qualitative measurement scales without having to quantify assessment grades to fixed numerical values. A case study is examined using an Intelligent Decision System (IDS) to illustrate the application of the decision modelling framework and decision support process for prioritizing the voices of customer for a world-leading car manufacturer. In this paper, we propose a multi-period overbooking model incorporating risk-aversion and extend well-known structural results (the 3-region policy) under the risk-neutral case to the risk-averse one on the basis of an exponential utility function. We also show that the optimal policy for the risk-neutral decision maker can be obtained by letting the risk-aversion parameter approach to zero under the risk-averse case. Therefore, the extant results under the risk-neutral case can be interpreted as a special case of ours. We also investigate how the optimal policy changes with some cost parameters and the decision maker's degree of risk-aversion. Numerical results suggest that the optimal bounds in the 3-region policy may increase or decrease with the decision maker's degree of risk-aversion. In order to mitigate functional failures, significant and critical devices should be identified and prioritized. In this paper, we present a multi-criteria decision-making model to prioritize medical devices according to their criticality. Devices with lower criticality scores can be assigned a lower priority in a maintenance management program. However, those with higher scores should be investigated in detail to find the reasons for their higher criticality, and appropriate actions, such as ‘preventive maintenance’, ‘user training’, ‘redesigning the device’, etc, should be taken. In this paper,we also describe how individual score values obtained for each criterion can be used to establish guidelines for appropriate maintenance strategies for different classes of devices. The information of 26 different medical devices is extracted from a hospital's maintenance management system to illustrate an application of the proposed model. The International Cricket Council has sanctioned world tournaments, the inaugural tournament in South Africa and the recent 2009 event, while the 2008 and 2009 Indian Premier League tournaments have generated profitable returns for both players and franchise owners. This paper describes methods for quantifying a cricket player's performance based on his ability to score runs and take wickets. These performance measures are then used to determine the optimal team using an integer programme. An illustration of the method is provided using data from the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007. The basic idea behind EAGH is that a greedy heuristic can be seen as a member of an infinite set of heuristics, this set being defined by a function that depends on several parameters. Each set of values of the parameters corresponds to a specific greedy heuristic. Then, the best element of the set, for a training set of instances of the problem, is found by applying a non-linear optimization algorithm to a function that measures the quality of the obtained solutions to the instances of the training set, and which depends on the parameters that characterize each specific algorithm. EAGH allows improving known heuristics or finding good new ones. We consider setting the threshold for cumulative sum charts to produce the desired false alarm rate, taking into account the centre volume and expected outcome rate. We used simulation to estimate the false alarm and successful detection rates for a variety of chart thresholds. We thereby calculated the ‘cost’ of a higher threshold compared with one set to give a false alarm rate of 5% for three clinical groups of common interest. The false alarm rate often showed non-linear relations with the threshold, volume and expected mortality rate but an equation was found with good approximation to the simulated values. The relation between these factors and the ‘cost’ of a higher threshold was not straightforward. The ‘cost’ (difference in number of deaths) incurred by raising the chart threshold provides an intuitive measure and is applicable to other settings. Yet banks do not extend credit to control charge-off, but to secure profit. So, while charge-off models work well in rank-ordering the loan default costs associated with lending and are ubiquitous throughout the industry, the equivalent models on the revenue side are not being used despite the need. This paper outlines a profit-based scoring system for credit cards to be used for acquisition decisions by addressing three issues. First, the paper explains why credit card profit models—as opposed to cost or charge-off models—have been difficult to build and implement. Second, a methodology for modelling revenue on credit cards at application is proposed. Finally, acquisition strategies are explored that use both a spend model and a charge-off model to balance tradeoffs between charge-off, revenue, and volume. The demand is assumed to be aggregated at certain points in the plane and the new facilities can be located at predetermined candidate sites. We employ Huff's gravity-based rule in modelling the behaviour of the customers where the probability that customers at a demand point patronize a certain facility is proportional to the facility attractiveness and inversely proportional to the distance between the facility site and demand point. The objective of the firm is to determine the locations of the new facilities and their attractiveness levels so as to maximize the profit, which is calculated as the revenue from the customers less the fixed cost of opening the facilities and variable cost of setting their attractiveness levels. We formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model for this problem and propose three methods for its solution: a Lagrangean heuristic, a branch-and-bound method with Lagrangean relaxation, and another branch-and-bound method with nonlinear programming relaxation. Computational results obtained on a set of randomly generated instances show that the last method outperforms the others in terms of accuracy and efficiency and can provide an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time. Assessing the economic, environmental and social impacts of tourism development has become a major activity within the tourism and sustainable development communities. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the contribution of system dynamics for analysing policies that can not only promote sustainable tourism development, but also act as a warning signal to the industry about the potential negative consequences of uncontrolled growth of mass tourism, particularly in island tourist economies. Previous research in the tourism sector has been fragmented, when a holistic approach is needed in order to try to coerce some alignment in the views of the various stakeholders. The main research results illustrated in this paper are: a generic model of a tourism system informed by the (mainly) South European island tourist economies and a set of scenarios illustrating examples of policy analysis. The generic model and the modelling process developed in this research will have some transferability to other issues concerned with policymaking for sustainable development. We have reinterpreted the results of previous field experiments involving the introduction of advanced equipment as part of soldier modernisation and believe that we now have a better understanding of why some attempts at data collection were not as successful as others. We propose a protocol based on the Army Practitioner providing first position data (subjective), the Analyst Observer and instrumentation providing third position data (objective) and the Subject Matter Adviser giving second position data (speculative). Although there is often a focus on first and third position data during field trials, second position data enables extrapolation to other contexts. This is especially important for exploratory studies investigating future concepts. Taken together, the combination of the three positions leads to a better strategy to enhance data collection of complex military systems. By deteriorating jobs, we mean that the processing time of a job is a simple linear function of its execution starting time. For the jobs with chain precedence constraints, we prove that the weighted sum of squared completion times minimization problem with strong chains and weak chains can be solved in polynomial time, respectively.
