Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : Scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy and magnetic force microscopy have been used in combination with SEM/EDS and immersion tests to study a 317L electroslag strip weld which contains austenite and interdendritic ferrite and sigma phase. The individual phases can easily be recognized from the compositional contrast, magnetic pattern and Volta potential variation. Austenite, which is paramagnetic, exhibits the highest Volta potential followed by non-magnetic sigma phase and ferromagnetic ferrite, respectively. Corrosion testing in acidic chloride solutions indicates that the Volta potential measured in air can be related to the tendency to uniform corrosion, while pitting corrosion shows different dependence. In both cases ferrite and sigma phase behaved in a similar manner, indicating that there was no specific detrimental effect of sigma phase on corrosion properties in this material.

Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : To investigate the influence of the addition of molybdenum ions on the transformation of green rust GR(Cl−) comprising Fe(II) and Fe(III) into different oxyhydroxides, suspensions of GR(Cl−) containing molybdenum ions were oxidized by passing nitrogen gas containing oxygen through the suspensions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for identifying the solid particles formed by oxidation. The results showed that in the presence of molybdenum ions, the formation of β-FeOOH and α-FeOOH was enhanced as compared to that of γ-FeOOH in the GR(Cl−) suspensions. This implied that the molybdenum ions interacted with the chloride ions obtained from GR(Cl−) and induced the formation of β-FeOOH that contained chloride ions. Transmission electron micrographs of the solid particles showed that the particle size of the resulting oxyhydroxides was considerably reduced because of the addition of the molybdenum ions. The pH and oxidation–reduction potential (ORP) of the aqueous solution were also measured during the oxidation. The addition of molybdenum ions was found to cause characteristic changes in the pH and ORP in the initial stage of the oxidation.

The results demonstrated that the pitting corrosion resistance of 316L for the galvanic combination sample is lower, and the coupled current density is higher than for the single 316L sample. It indicates that the galvanic action works on the corrosion behavior of the TA2 titanium alloy/316L stainless steel galvanic combination in sodium chloride solution. The galvanic effect width was determined as 1500 µm.

Protection des matériaux Résumé : The aim of this study is focused on the effect of fluoride concentration on the corrosion behavior of Ti7Al3V2Mo2Fe alloys uncoated/coated in artificial saliva. Ti7Al3V2Mo2Fe alloys were covered by chemical methods with hydroxyapatite to enhance the osteointegration of implants materials. The stability of Ti7Al3V2Mo2Fe alloys uncoated/coated in artificial saliva with/without fluoride ions was studied by electrochemical techniques (open circuit potential, cyclic voltammetry, and linear polarization). On the covered samples, dissolution test in simulated body fluids and wettability test were performed. Investigations regarding the sample surface modifications were made by atomic force microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that the corrosion resistance of Ti7Al3V2Mo2Fe in solution containing fluoride decreases in comparison with that in a solution not containing fluoride. Significant changes appear at a concentration larger than 0.05 M. The coating has a positive effect on corrosion resistance of metallic substrate in the fluoride presence acting as a semi-mechanical barrier.

Aerated Ringer's solution was employed as electrolyte solution at 37 °C. The pH was 6.9 and adjusted to 2.5 simulating the disease state. The results show excellent corrosion resistance for recrystallized Ti12Mo and Ti12Mo5Ta alloys, corroborated by high values of polarization resistance and low values of passive current density. Recrystallized structure rendered the Ti12Mo and Ti12Mo5Ta alloys extremely corrosion resistant.

The results showed that both techniques can improve the protective properties of coatings. A ‘critical nano-La2O3 content’ and a ‘critical deposition potential’ were observed, under which the conversion coatings had the highest protective properties. Increased electrodeposition time improve the quality of conversion coatings. The La-conversion coatings could provide important protection against α-brass corrosion for considerable immersion periods in 3.5 wt% sodium chloride solution because it ennobled the corrosion potential and decreased the anodic current.

Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : The effects of zinc oxide and/or polyethylene glycol (PEG) as electrolyte additives on the corrosion and electrochemical performances of pure aluminum in 4.0 M KOH solutions were investigated by means of hydrogen collection, polarization curve, galvanostatic discharge, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX). The addition of ZnO markedly inhibited the corrosion of aluminum in 4.0 M KOH solutions, resulting from the deposition of zinc with high hydrogen evolution overpotential in aluminum surfaces. The introduction of PEG in the alkaline zincate solution obviously improved the deposition of zinc by increase in the overpotential of zinc deposition, thus the corrosion rate of aluminum in the alkaline zincate solutions with PEG was further decreased. The enhancement effect of PEG on the inhibition of zinc oxide first increased and then decreased with increasing the content of PEG in the electrolyte. The electrolyte system with 0.2 M ZnO and 2.0 mM PEG presented the highest inhibition efficiency (98.8%) for the corrosion of aluminum. The results of galvanostatic discharge indicated that the aluminum anode shows excellent discharge performances in the 4.0 M KOH solution with 0.2 M ZnO and 2.0 mM PEG.

Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : The performance of the selected inhibitors, including thioglycolic acid (TGA), diethylenetriamine (DETA), and naphthene acid imidazolines (IM), on the bare surface of N80 steel and its scaled surface pre-corroded in CO2-saturated 1%NaCl solution was investigated by weight-loss method, electrochemical measurements using rotating cylinder electrode and surface analytical methods (SEM, XRD, and EPMA). The results indicate that there is a remarkable difference in inhibition efficiency of inhibitors on the N80 steel with and without pre-corrosion scale. The synergistic effect between inhibitors and corrosion scale not only depends on the size of inhibitor molecules, but also depends on the interaction of the inhibitor with the corrosion scale. It shows that IM and DETA have a good positive synergistic effect with the corrosion scale formed on N80 steel, although DETA has no inhibition efficiency for bare N80 steel, which can easily enter into the apertures of the corrosion scale, and block the active sites on the metal surface and the diffusion routeways of the reactant so as to depress the corrosion of the substrate metal. While TGA shows excellent inhibition efficiency on bare N80 steel, but it has an antagonistic effect with the corrosion scale although it has a small molecular weight as well as DETA, because TGA can dissolve corrosion scale and break its integrality and protectiveness performance.

Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : Inhibition of the corrosion of reinforced steel in concrete in 0.5 M NaCl by Arghel extract has been studied employing different electrochemical techniques in conjunction with optical images photo. Potential-time measurements showed that introducing of Arghel extract into concrete shifts the potential of reinforced steel to more positive values. Potentiodynamic polarization curves measurements manifested that Arghel extract acts as anodic type inhibitor. Nyquist plots were characterized by a distinct charge transfer and diffusion components. A proposed equivalent circuit was used to analyze the impedance spectra of reinforced steel in concrete in 0.5 M NaCl. Optical images for the cracked lollipops samples of the reinforced steel in concrete that is immersed in 0.5 M NaCl for 18 months showed no corrosion attack even in the presence of a low concentration of Arghel which is in good agreement with the results obtained from the electrochemical techniques.
