Two aspect ratios of 2D angular particules and different states of initial fabric are considered. The stress ratio at characteristic state is found to be much more sensitive to initial anisotropy than to density changes. Fabric is the kind of anisotropy that seems to influence the most the characteristic state. Constant amplitude cycling does not erase the influence of the initial anisotropy of fabric which was not expected. Then, in the framework of usual soil modelling where the material is supposed to be in an initially isotropic state, the usual models for the characteristic state are only valid for constant cyclic strain amplitude loadings where the mean anisotropy throughout the cycles remains low. It is now standardised in regulations providing for hazards studies using probability-based risk analysis procedures. Dam safety probability-based assessment includes two key scientific issues: the modelling of complex mechanisms that occur within the works, and a probability-based assessment of structural safety. This paper introduces a combined application of risk analysis and dam reliability methodologies. This combination required the completion of our work on the adaptation of risk analysis methods to dams, and on the probability-based modelling of strength and loading input data for a reliability-based analysis. These methodologies are then implemented as part of a hazards study on a roller-compacted-concrete gravity dam. This process is very complex and can be identified by associated crack parameters such as crack openings and crack length. These parameters are the direct indicators of the local failure in the material microstructure and can completely describe the fracture process of the concrete structure. The purpose of this article is to monitor experimentally the crack openings in geometrically similar concrete beams with different sizes. An experimental approach is used to estimate the effective crack length from the crack opening profile. For this, the digital image correlation technique is applied on the specimen surface to capture crack propagation. Size effect on the crack propagation is also investigated. The cases of plates simply supported or resting on Winkler-type soil are studied. The two cases under study intend to provide a simplified tool for predicting the response respectively for specimens subjected to blast pressure wave inside shock-tube facilities and for slabs on ground under blast loads. The second case also represents the loading conditions inside a new shock-tube facility specifically intended for the investigation of underground tunnel lining subjected to blast loads. The aim of this work is the pressure--impulse diagrams derivations for circular plates with several material characteristics, radius/thickness ratio and Winkler’s constant. Eurocode 8 (EC8) and the Algerian bridge seismic regulation code (Règles Parasismiques applicables au domaine des Ouvrages d’Art; RPOA) are among the rare bridge design codes that introduced simplified approaches for SVGM. This paper aims at evaluating the accuracy of the method proposed by the RPOA through comparison with more refined approaches and the EC8 provisions. Various bridges are considered and the results show that the RPOA’s simplified method does not give satisfactory results and clearly overestimates the seismic demand. The solution proposed in this paper is to modify some provisions, and the new approach gives results which are in better agreement with the other methods. With the growth of the use of deep mixing for foundations, it is important to better define the mechanical behaviour and ageing of the material, depending on the cement content and grain size distribution. This study aims to quantify the impact of these parameters as well as the percentage of fines on the mechanical behaviour of the mixed material. A number of unconfined compression tests were carried out. The results showed that it was possible to predict the strength of the mixed material after seven and 28 days of curing, depending on the cement content and the percentage of fines. Also, it was shown that a uniform sand treated with cement presents the same hardening trend for all cement contents. Conversely, a soil with a larger spread of grain size distribution will show different hardening processes, depending on the cement content.
