We consider a stylized supply chain that includes one manufacturer and one retailer, and we characterize the optimal prices of the retailer and the manufacturer. We further discuss the effects of the fraction of the bargainers in the customer population and the relative bargaining power of the bargainers on these optimal prices. Our results show that, given the wholesale price, the lowest price at which the retailer is willing to sell (ie, cut-off price) increases with the relative bargaining power of the bargainers. Both posted and cut-off prices increase in the fraction of the bargainers in the customer population. Moreover, depending on the type of negotiation cost, the variations of both prices will vary. In equilibrium, both posted and cut-off prices do not monotonically increase with the fraction of the bargainers in the customer population. When the maximum reservation price of the customers is low, and/or the negotiation costs are high, and/or the relationship between the bargainer's negotiation cost and reservation price is high, the retailer may reduce both posted and cut-off prices as the fraction of the bargainers increases. This research analyses data from the National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals in developing a logistic-regression model to predict the outcome of games that takes into consideration several factors, including home-court advantage and game-to-game momentum. It is found that negative serial correlation exists such that the team that wins one game is more likely to lose the next game of the series. This model is then used to predict the probability of each team winning each of the games within the series, and these probabilities are combined to evaluate alternative playoff formats. It is found that different formats are appropriate depending on the nature of momentum, and that the format used by the NBA may minimize travel requirements, but other formats may perform better in extending the length of the series. Since facility locations affect the firm’s market exposure and subsequently its profit, accounting for the impact of the location decisions on customers while anticipating the reaction of competitor firms is essential. In this paper, we introduce a competitive facility location problem where market prices and production costs are determined through the economic equilibrium while explicitly considering competition from other firms. In order to accommodate for the growing efforts on limiting carbon emissions, the presented model includes constraints on the amount of carbon emissions that are due to transportation, while allowing carbon trading. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear model. Through numerical examples, we illustrate the effect of market competition on the location decisions and discuss the impact of emission limits and carbon trading on customers. Published research has focused on producing models for strategy development and on studying how strategy is developed in organisations. The Operational Research literature has highlighted the importance of considering complexity within strategic decision making; but little has been done to link strategy development with complexity theories, despite organisations and organisational environments becoming increasingly more complex. We review the dominant streams of strategy development and complexity theories. Our theoretical investigation results in the first conceptual framework which links an established Strategic Operational Research model, the Strategy Development Process model, with complexity via Complex Adaptive Systems theory. We present preliminary findings from the use of this conceptual framework applied to a longitudinal, in-depth case study, to demonstrate the advantages of using this integrated conceptual model. Our research shows that the conceptual model proposed provides rich data and allows for a more holistic examination of the strategy development process. The critical point in this logistic system is the integration between production and transportation management, given the long distance between Brescia and Foshan. Shipments are performed by the means of different types of vehicles with different unit costs and significantly different lead times. Variable production costs, variable and fixed transportation costs and, possibly, inventory costs are charged in the objective function. Different production policies are compared. Our aim is to determine integrated policies that minimize the total cost of the system. We formulate integer linear programming models for the solution of these problems, and we solve the real instance and carry out a sensitivity analysis of the optimal solution. So far, those models do not take into account interactions among different organizational decision levels. In this paper, a multi-level manpower planning model is presented that considers, besides the desirable stock vector at overall level, proposals for the departmental stocks from lower organizational levels. Attainability of the stock vectors at departmental level is examined under control by recruitment and interdepartmental transitions. A multi-level optimization algorithm is presented to determine an optimal recruitment strategy resulting in attainable and acceptable stocks that are a compromise between the proposal from the top and the proposals from the departments. In particular, the reorder point and order-up-to level have to be selected so as to satisfy two management-specified constraints. First, from a marketing (or, more generally, a business) perspective, the actual fill rate achieved must be no lower than a prescribed value. Second, for production or supply purposes, the average time between consecutive replenishments must be as close as possible to a target value. The demand distribution considered is the negative binomial. An efficient procedure is developed with illustrations. Petroleum production allocation problems are problems in which the determination of optimal production rates, lift gas rates and well connections are the central decisions. The motivation for modelling and solving such optimization problems stems from the value that lies in an increased production rate and the current lack of integrated software that considers petroleum production systems as a whole. Through our computational study, which is based on realistic production data from the Troll West field, we show the increase in computational efficiency that a parallel Dantzig–Wolfe algorithm offers. In addition, we show that previously implemented standard parallel algorithms lead to an inefficient use of parallel resources. A more advanced parallel algorithm is therefore developed to improve efficiency, making it possible to scale the algorithm by adding more CPUs and thus approach a reasonable solution time for realistic-sized problems. To destroy the system, the attacker must always penetrate/destroy the collective (overarching) protection. In the case of the parallel system, it also must destroy all elements, whereas in the case of the series system, it must destroy at least one element. Both the attacker and the defender have limited resources and can distribute these freely between the two types of protection. The attacker chooses the resource distribution and the number of attacked elements to maximize the system destruction probability. The defender chooses the resource distribution and the number of protected elements to minimize the system destruction probability. The bi-contest minmax game is formulated and its analytical solutions are presented and analysed. The asymptotical analysis of the solutions is presented. The influence of the game parameters on the optimal defence and attack strategies is discussed. However, the use of panel data to analyse the impact of regulatory policies on productivity change over time is less frequent. The main purpose of this paper is to construct a Malmquist productivity index to examine the recent productivity change experienced by Norwegian distribution companies between 2004 and 2007. The Malmquist index is decomposed in order to explore the sources of productivity change, and to identify the innovator companies that pushed the frontier forward each year. The input and output variables considered are those used by the Norwegian regulator. In order to reflect appropriately the exogenous conditions where the companies operate, the efficiency model used in this paper incorporates geography variables as outputs of the DEA model. Unlike the model used by the regulator, we included virtual weight restrictions in the DEA formulation to correct the biases in the DEA results that may be associated to a judicious choice of weights by some of the companies. The retailer sells the product in response to stochastic demand and provides the manufacturer with periodic updates about his inventories. Replenishing the retailer's inventory under two myopic base-stock policies is addressed. These policies, referred to as vendor managed inventory, represent a relatively new approach to allocating responsibility in the replenishment process. Specifically, the manufacturer, who is responsible for the retailer's inventories, can replenish them either continuously at any point in time or periodically, at one point in time for each period. The myopic replenishment policies that are considered are of a base-stock type. It is shown that the selected policies become optimal as the number of review periods tends to infinity. Furthermore, the two replenishment alternatives are compared in terms of both base-stock levels and expected costs, including those for inventory holding/shortage and transportation costs. Although continuous rather than periodic replenishment is evidently more expensive in terms of transportation costs, it is shown that even when the transportation cost constitutes more than 55% of the total average cost, it may still be preferable to replenish continuously rather than periodically. Either there exists a feasible solution through the admissible cells (which is therefore optimal since the complementary slackness conditions hold) or we could begin using the primal–dual algorithm (PDA) at this point. Our approach has two important advantages: Our O(mn) procedure for updating dual variables takes much less computing time than any procedure for solving a maximum flow problem in the primal phase of the PDA. We are never concerned by the degeneracy problem as we are not seeking basic solutions, but admissible cells. An example is presented for illustrating our approach. We finally provide computational results for a set of 30 randomly generated instances. Comparison of our method with the PDA reveals a real speed up. They assured that the acceptance sampling plans for percentiles significantly improve the traditional ones for mean life. In this paper, a double-sampling procedure is developed for Burr type XII distribution percentiles to save sample resource with a truncated censoring scheme. Minimum sample sizes for implementing the proposed double-sampling method are determined under the satisfied levels of consumer's risk and producer's risk. Illustrative examples are used to demonstrate the applications of the proposed method. Compared with the SASP, the proposed double-sampling acceptance plan uses less sample resource in average for truncated life testing.
