Titre : Dredged marine sand as construction material Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jussara Limeir, Auteur ; Luis Agulló, Auteur ; Miren Etxeberria, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 906-918 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Dredged marine sand Mortar Concrete Mechanical properties Résumé : This work deals with the study of dredged marine sand (DMS) from the Port of Sant Carles de la Ràpita (Tarragona, Spain) as construction material. The analysis of its influence on paste, mortar and concrete production is described. Two experimental phases were carried out after the chemical and physical characteristics of DMS were determined. Firstly, pastes and mortars were made using CEM II/A-M 42.5R cement, different percentages of DMS in replacement of raw sand and plasticiser additive in order to obtain the fresh and hardened properties of the mixes studied. After that, DMS was used for the production of concretes as fine aggregates. A pilot study was carried out with harbour concrete pavements produced at industrial scale. The results were compared to those of the control mixes and proved the satisfactory behaviour of DMS as construction material when incorporated into concrete as granular corrector. Titre : Durability properties of marine sediments stabilised by pozzolan and alkali-activated binders Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Makiko Obana, Auteur ; Daniel Levacher, Auteur ; Philippe Dhervilly, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 919-926 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Durability Marine sediment Stabilisation Pozzolan Alkali activation Résumé : The Mont-Saint-Michel Project has been carried out to restore the maritime characteristics that existed before 1995. Attempts have been made to use marine sediments e.g. in the construction of pavements and driveways. Hence, methods to stabilise marine sediments have recently been developed. A new approach to sediment stabilisation is here proposed by using pozzolan and alkali-activated binders. Freeze–thaw and wet–dry tests are conducted to determine the durability of the sediments and to examine their suitability for use as construction material. The binders are prepared by alkali activation using pozzolan, and different amounts of the binders are mixed with marine sediment. The surfaces of one group of sediments are treated by a substance containing liquid glass. We compare the durability properties and deformation behaviours of two different types of specimen, by conducting tests and taking into consideration climatic conditions. The sediments stabilised by surface treatment showed high durability properties. ISSN : 1964-8189 En ligne : http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/19648189.2012.676414

Pires-Silva, Auteur ; Margarida Belo-Pereirab, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 927-942 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Nearshore wave propagation SWAN model ADCP measurements Wind resolution Offshore boundary conditions Whitecapping modelling Résumé : In the present study, the SWAN model was employed to estimate the wave field on an open sandy beach at the west coast of Portugal. It is the purpose of this work to evaluate the sensitivity of nearshore wave propagation modelling to (i) the wind field resolution, (ii) the type of information used at the offshore boundary to drive the simulations, and (iii) the whitecapping formulation used by the wave model. Wave measurements from an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) sensor moored in 17 m depth (datum), and operating during a rather stormy period, were used to model comparisons. The comparison showed that no significant differences in the results were found between the two wind field resolutions tested and also that an improvement was observed when the model of van der Westhuysen et al. (2007) is used for the whitecapping dissipation, instead of the default formulation by Komen et al. (1984). Sea level and sea state measurements available at SHOM (French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service) were analysed to characterise the event. Sea level return periods during the storm along the Atlantic and the Channel French coasts were estimated from comparison between sea level measurements and extreme sea levels statistically computed. Surges in La Rochelle were modelled taking into account phenomena generating the surges (atmospheric pressure, wind and waves). Thus, sea level rise due to waves, the wave set-up, was modelled. Simulations were computed by WaveWatch III and HYCOM. The modelled surges from 20 February to 1 March have been compared to observed surges in La Rochelle during the same period in order to evaluate their accuracy. Despite their advantages compared with conventional revetments and the experience available from more than 25 pilot projects, design formulae to predict their hydraulic performance, wave loading and response are still lacking. Therefore, the paper addresses the analysis of large-scale tests performed in the Large Wave Flume (GWK) of Hanover/Germany. The study aims at improving the understanding of the processes involved in the interaction between wave, revetment and foundation and at developing the missing design formulae for a broad range of wave conditions. The analysis of an observed failure due to transient soil liquefaction under regular waves is also described. Titre : Measurements of surf zone sand bed dynamics under irregular waves Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Céline Berni, Auteur ; Hervé Michallet, Auteur ; Eric Barthélemy, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 981-994 Note générale : Génie Civil Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Sediment transport Erosion Sheet flow Wave breaking Pore pressure Résumé : Measurements of velocity profiles, sediment concentration, pore-pressure and sheet flow layer dynamics are analysed in order to better assess the relative importance of the processes that contribute to destabilise the bed of a sandy beach. These measurements were conducted in the surf zone of irregular waves, in a 30 m × 30 m wave tank. The effects of flow acceleration, excess pore-pressure vertical gradients across the bed and infiltration/exfiltration seepage flow are studied. The appearance of a sheet flow layer is apparently initiated by the strong accelerations in the wave fronts. These results are compared to field measurements at Truc-Vert beach (Atlantic coast of France). Probably due to the partial saturation of the bed made of finer sand in the wave tank experiments, the upwards-directed excess pore-pressure gradient could enhance the bed destabilisation compared to that observed in the field.
