Titre : Study of sensitization and different heating cycles on stainless steels used for automotive exhaust components Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : M. Yasir, Auteur ; G. Mori, Auteur ; H. Wieser, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : pp. 763–776 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : High temperature corrosion; pitting corrosion; sensitization; stainless steels Résumé : In order to achieve a reasonable lifetime of automotive exhaust components, a large number of high alloyed ferritic and austenitic stainless steels are used nowadays. It is a common concept that the lifetime of a component is directly related to the performance of steel against corrosion. The components are divided into different sections depending on their service temperatures. High temperature oxidation resistance is one of the properties which are required in different sections. The effect of material sensitization on corrosion resistance of stainless steels is well understood from the literature. Besides, sensitization materials in exhaust systems have to withstand different cyclic heating and cooling phases. The objective of this study was to develop a basic understanding that can determine the influence of different temperature treatments on stainless steels. A fundamental understanding on the interaction of sensitization and cyclic heat impacts are presented in the paper. In addition to the proposals made for the improvement of these models, preliminary results of an ongoing study aimed at developing a chloride-induced corrosion rate prediction model using both natural and accelerated corrosion results are presented. Even though a reasonable correlation between natural and accelerated icorr is presented here, more data are still required to ascertain the relationship. Titre : Electrochemical investigations on the corrosion behaviour of galvanized reinforcing steels in concrete with chromate-reduced cements Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : G. Ebell, Auteur ; A. Burkert, Auteur ; J. Lehmann, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : pp. 791–802 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Cement; chromate; concrete; electrochemical measurements; galvanized steel; polarization; pull-out tests; reinforcing steel; zinc Résumé : The reduction of the chromate contents in cements affects the electrochemical reactions of galvanized reinforcing steels in fresh concrete. By means of electrochemical measurements and bar pull-out tests the effect of chromates on the formation of protective coatings at the zinc and the bond behaviour have been investigated using chromate-containing and chromate-reduced cements. The results have shown that the bond zone was affected as a result of chromate reduction for cement types CEM I and CEM II. The disturbance to the bond zone should be considered as long-term in relation to the pore structure which is formed. The effects on the bond are largely compensated for as the concrete ages. The results of the related bond strength with displacement paths of 0.1 and 0.5 mm, respectively, are still within the range of expected figures for non-galvanized reinforcing steel despite the structural disturbance. Under practical aspects it is not necessary that the existing structural disturbance with respect to bond strength is taken into consideration. Jamesh, Auteur ; Satendra Kumar, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : pp. 803–806 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Corrosion; corrosion resistance; electrochemical impedance spectroscopy; impedance; materials selection; metals and alloys; passive oxide film; phase angle maximum; sulphuric acid medium; Ti–Mo alloys Résumé : The corrosion resistance of Ti–Mo (5, 10, 15 and 25 wt% molybdenum) alloys in 5–25% sulphuric acid was evaluated. The Ti–Mo alloys offered a better corrosion resistance than commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti). The higher impedance values, higher phase angle maximum, ability to reach the phase angle maximum at relatively lower frequencies, ability to exhibit a constant phase angle maximum over a wider range of frequencies, higher phase angle values at 0.01 Hz, have confirmed the formation of a stable passive oxide film on Ti–Mo alloys. The study recommends the use of Ti–Mo alloys, particularly Ti–25Mo alloy, as a suitable material of construction for sulphuric acid medium. An equiatomic NiTi alloy was used in some tests as reference material. Electrochemical techniques such as anodic potentiodynamic polarization, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed. Experiments were carried out using artificial saliva. Very low passive current densities were obtained from the anodic polarization curve, indicating a typical passive behaviour for NiTiNb alloy. Over the surface of the NiTiNb alloy uniform corrosion appears, while in case of the NiTi alloy surface pitting corrosion is developed. The role that Nb plays as an alloying element is by increasing the resistance of NiTi alloy to localized corrosion. The EIS results exhibited high impedance values (order of 106 Ω cm2) obtained from medium to low frequencies which are indicative of the formation of a highly stable passive film on NiTiNb alloy in the artificial saliva. Liu, Auteur Année de publication : 2013 Article en page(s) : pp. 813–818 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Corrosion behavior; micro-arc oxidation; microstructure; TiO2 nanoparticles Résumé : The microstructure and corrosion behavior of the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings modified by TiO2 on AZ91 magnesium alloys were investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD, electrochemical analysis and drop test, respectively. The modified MAO coatings were consisted of not only MgAl2O4 and MgO, which usually could be found in MAO coatings on the AZ91 alloys, but also a small quantity of Ti. With increasing the contents of TiO2 nanoparticles from 0 to 4.8 g/L in the electrolyte, the coatings thickness increased from 19 to 24 µm, and the color of the MAO coating changed from light gray to dark. The addition of TiO2 could effectively decrease the number of the pores and improve the density of the coatings. The corrosion potential of the modified coatings positively shifted about 180 mV and the corrosion current density declined and the drop time increased. The mechanism of the corrosion resistances of the modified coatings lay in the fact that TiO2 nanoparticles could increase the thickness and the density of the coatings on the AZ91 magnesium alloys. The withdrawal speed of substrates from the sol was 20 cm · min−1. The hybrid films were obtained by dip-coating process and analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy, Rutherford scattering spectroscopy (RBS), salt spray test, and electrochemical analyses. The correlation among the results obtained from different analyses was very good and indicated that the addition of Ce ion in the hybrid coating contributed to the corrosion resistance; however, for the high Ce ion concentration, the barrier effect of the hybrid films was deteriorated. The results obtained by RBS showed that the concentration of Ce ion in the hybrid film increased linearly with the concentration of Ce ion in the sol. Moreover, it was verified that, for the nominal concentration of 0.05 M Ce ion in the sol, the Ce atomic fraction increased in the hybrid film, while the Si atomic fraction reduced, indicating the possible modification on the silane network due to the incorporation of Ce ions. The results show that the alloys display a good general corrosion resistance that is mainly influenced by the Cu content and elemental segregation degree. The corrosion resistance degrades when increasing Cu content and elemental segregation degree. Among the tested alloys, the CuCr2Fe2Ni2Mn2 alloy with low Cu content and elemental segregation degree displays a better general corrosion resistance. On the contrary, the Cu2CrFe2NiMn2 alloy with high Cu content and elemental segregation degree exhibits the worst general corrosion resistance.
