Titre : Corrosion of stainless steel grades in molten NaOH/KOH eutectic at 250 °C: AISI304 austenitic and 2205 duplex Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : B. Bozzini, Auteur ; S. Barella, Auteur ; F. Bogani, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : pp. 967–978 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Austenitic stainless steel duplex EIS KOH molten alkali NaOH Résumé : The present paper focuses on the corrosion of an austenitic (AISI304) and a duplex (2205) stainless steel grade in molten KOH/NaOH 50 w/o eutectic at 250 °C. Experimental activities have been performed consisting in electrochemical measurements (linear sweep voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrometry) complemented by metallographic (in-plane and cross-sectional SEM micrography), structural (X-ray diffractometry) and compositional (EDX line-profiles) characterisation of the materials attacked under electrochemically controlled conditions. Electrochemical measurements have shown that AISI304 exhibits a passivating behaviour, characterised by two passivation peaks and a transpassive threshold, while duplex, does not yield a clear indication of passivation. AISI304 was found to fail by intergranular corrosion and to be covered in both passive and transpassive conditions, by an incoherent scale, containing electrolyte species. Duplex samples, instead tends to fail by homogeneous attack and exhibit a range of scale structures, depending on the applied potential. Titre : The influence of secondary phase carbide particles on the passivity behaviour of NiTi shape memory alloys Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : L. Neelakantan, Auteur ; B. Monchev, Auteur ; M. Frotscher, Auteur Année de publication : 2014 Article en page(s) : pp. 979–984 Note générale : Génie mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Inclusions interfaces nickel titanium shape memory alloys pitting polarisation Résumé : The current investigation aims at studying the passivity behaviour of NiTi shape memory alloys with different levels of secondary phase titanium carbide (TiC) particles in an electrolyte of 0.9% sodium chloride at 37 °C. The influence of carbides and thermo-mechanical treatment/cold working on the passivity breakdown is highlighted. The polarisation studies on the as-cast and cold worked NiTi with high (0.05 wt%) and low (0.005 wt%) carbon levels show a significant difference in oxide stability. The alloy with extremely low carbon content shows a higher breakdown potential. Higher carbon levels result in higher density of larger TiC and these carbide/matrix interfaces are more susceptible to pitting. The qualitative behaviour of passive layer formed at 0.5 V on the cold worked NiTi alloy with different carbon levels was ascertained by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The oxide on the NiTi alloy with high (0.05 wt%) carbon levels showed lower resistance and poor stability at this condition. Anodic potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were used for the study of the electrochemical behavior of coated NiTi with chitosan through pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Experiments were carried out using two different electrolytes: physiological 0.9 wt% NaCl solution (PS) and PS + hydrochloric acid (APS) at 37 ± 1 °C. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was employed to observe the surface morphology after maintaining in both electrolytes. The corrosion resistance was evaluated by means of the corrosion and passive corrosion currents. The electrochemical properties of the coated NiTi sample at the open circuit potential at different immersion time in PS and APS were studied by EIS. Equivalent circuits were used to model EIS data, in order to characterize samples' surface. En ligne : http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/maco.201206501/abstract

The microstructural features were revealed through optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. The formation and stability of passive film was studied by open circuit potential, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical scratch tests. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results simulated with equivalent electrical circuit suggested bilayer structure of outer porous and inner barrier oxide films. The quantitative data showed thick inner barrier oxide film retarded electrochemical reactions at low ‘Ta’ and ‘Sn’ concentration. The increased percentage of ‘Ta’ and ‘Sn’ deteriorated barrier properties by agglomeration of Ta2Sn3 and Ta0.15Ti0.85 precipitates within grains and at the grain boundaries. Analysis of chemical compositions and surface morphology of the corrosion scale were performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The semi-passive character of corrosion scale was investigated using polarization curves measurements. The influence of microstructure on the chromium enrichment in the corrosion scale for different test periods was investigated. The microstructure was observed to affect the corrosion behavior even when the steel surface has been covered with corrosion scales and continue to have an effect until the corrosion scale possessing semi-passive character. Possessing both good strength and corrosion resistance, 3%Cr steel with bainite-ferrite microstructure was very promising for pipeline steel applications. The corrosion resistance of the new alloy steel was evaluated in terms of electrochemical parameters, such as passive current density, film, and charge transfer resistances. The results showed that a high Al content in the steel imparted better passivation behavior resulting in a lower corrosion rate. The integrated sensor unit includes an Ag/AgCl probe, a metallic oxide probe, a multi-electrode array sensor (MAS), and a four-pin (Wenner) array stainless steel electrode for chloride content, pH, microcell corrosion current, and localized concrete resistivity measurements, respectively. A stable solid probe was used as the reference probe in this unit to express the potentiometric measurement of chloride content and pH probes. In this study, the chloride and pH probes were calibrated in simulated pore solutions (SPSs) regarding temperature and pH fluctuations. The corrosion current results of the MAS probe in SPSs matched very well with those obtained by the linear polarization resistance technique, which was conducted on companion carbon steel specimens. A sensor prototype was embedded into a paste cylinder for long-term performance evaluation. Up-to-date results show that the sensor probes exhibit excellent sensitivity and reliability through 1 year of monitoring. Continuous monitoring in the laboratory for extended periods is underway. The experimental results showed that a dosage of Na3PO4 stimulated the copper corrosion, and the corrosion rate increased with increasing Na3PO4 concentration, whereas the mixture of BTA and Na3PO4 could protect copper in aqueous TBAB solution. The inhibition action of the mixture of BTA and Na3PO4 on the corrosion of copper is mainly due to the inhibition of the anodic process of corrosion. The inhibition efficiency of a mixture consisting of 2 g/L BTA and 1 g/L Na3PO4 was about 96%. The mixture of BTA and Na3PO4 inhibits the corrosion of copper better than BTA by itself, indicating that Na3PO4 has a synergistic role with BTA on the corrosion inhibition of copper in TBAB aqueous solution.
