A partially heat-integrated distillation system is introduced for ternary separation. The lower section of the first column and the upper section of the second column in a conventional two column system for a ternary separation are thermally integrated using an internally heat-integrated column. The proposed system has been applied to two example processes, hexane and BTX processes, for performance evaluation, and heat duty savings of 17.1% and 16.7%, respectively, are yielded from the proposed system. However, the comparison of entropy production rate between the proposed and conventional systems is split in the two processes. Though the heat integration is partial in the proposed system, no compressor is required, making the column operation easier than the fully heat-integrated system of binary separation.
