The projection of general cargo imports obtained on the basis of this trend have been used in the determination of the physical requirements, that is to say location of contrainer ports, berth and port terminals, inland terminals, handing equipements and maritime and inland means of transport. The evaluation of the investment, as compared against the break bulk system, shows an extra cost wich represents about 50% of the investment needed by the same growth of the external trade if Algeria did not adopt containerisation. But when compared with savings generated by containerisation, the marginal cost brings 324% of savings. The results obtained confirmed the efficiency of the container system, while evidence exists already. The conclusion reached by the study is that the introduction of containerisation, together with other related measures, will certainly help to solve the problem of port obstruction and will improve the efficiency of the whole transport system.
