Titre : Analysis of the volatile components of onosma echioides (L.) L. var. columnae lacaita growing in central Italy Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Filippo Maggi, Auteur ; Bruno Tirillini, Auteur ; Sauro Vittori, Auteur Article en page(s) : pp. 441-447 Note générale : Génie Chimique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Onosma echioides var Columnae Boraginaceae Essential oil composition Phytol Hexadecanoic acid Hexahydrofarnesyl acetone Index. décimale : 646 Résumé : Volatile components obtained by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts (leaves and flowers) of Onosma echioides (L.) L. var. columnae Lacaita (Boraginaceae family) growing wild in central Italy (Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo regions) were investigated by GC and GC/MS for the first time.
Sixty-four volatile components were identified: hexadecanoic acid (3.2–33.8%) and phytol (7.3–15.2%) were predominant in the flower oils, while phytol (36.5–54.5%) and hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (7.1–12.1%) were the major components in the leaf oils.
Alkanes, fatty acids and aldehydes constituted the major fraction in the flower oils, while oxygenated diterpenes and ketones were predominant in the leaf oils.
Phytol was isolated by flash chromatography and its identity was confirmed by IR, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra.
Variation of the volatile components in the six populations of O. echioides var. columnae, due to genetic and geographic factors, was analyzed by cluster analysis.DEWEY : 665 ISSN : 1041-2905 En ligne : http://www.jeoronline.com/archive/detail/42#top [article] Analysis of the volatile components of onosma echioides (L.) Monoterpenes hydrocarbons were also predominant in the oil of subsp. veronense, while sesquiterpenes and aliphatic hydrocarbons were found in the oil of subsp. perforatum. Such quantitative differentiation in the oil composition of the flowers may be useful as a chemotaxonomic intraspecific discriminatory character. Fifty-nine components were identified, representing 89.3% of the oil under study. The oxygenated monoterpenes gave the highest contribution (33.0 %), and citronellol (29.7%) was the main component of this fraction. Esters were the second most abundant group of components (18.8%) with ethyl hexadecanoate (9.5%) as the main representative in this fraction. Qualitative and quantitative composition of the oil was discussed in order to support the actual botanical discrimination from E. major Host, so far exclusively morphologically based. Forty-six components were identified, representing 91.5% of the oil. The sesquiterpene fraction gave the highest contribution (68.4%), whilst monoterpenes amounted to 22.5%. The major constituents were β-pinene (11.9%), α-humulene (7.4%), β-caryophyllene (6.5%) and α-selinene (5.4%). Results confirm that hybridization may generate novel secondary chemistry in plants. (Lamiaceae) Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Filippo Maggi, Auteur ; Fabrizio Papa, Auteur ; Sauro Vittori, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 321-337 Note générale : Génie Chimique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Melittis melissophyllum Lamiaceae Essential oil GC/FID GC/MS SPME Résumé : 1-Octen-3-ol is an eight-carbon atom alcohol playing the major role in conferring the typical and unmistakable aroma to edible mushrooms. The presence of 1-octen-3-ol in plants was highlighted in the 1940s in various kinds of mint and lavender essential oils. Since then, many Lamiaceae were found to contain this molecule, but, to our knowledge, the plant essential oil that contains the highest percentage of this molecule is that of Melittis melissophyllum. In the present review, we reported all studies based on gas chromatography performed on this plant in order to characterize its mushroom-like flavor. This plant revealed to be a source providing economically interesting natural flavor to be exploited in the near future.
