Berg., (Myrtaceae) obtained by hydrodistillation, were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. Thirty-four components were identified, representing more than 80% of total oil. The major components were β-caryophyllene (flowers −12.8%), caryophyllene oxide (stems—17.2%), globulol (stems—16.5%; leaves—22.5% at vegetative stage and 18.9% at flowering stage), 1-epi-cubenol (stems −10.9%), epi—α—muurolol (stems—16.8%) and α—cadinol (stems—12.1%; flowers −10.1%). The oils were evaluated against 20 strains of bacteria (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) and yeasts. All oils showed mild to moderate antimicrobial activity associated mainly with Gram-positive bacteria and yeasts. (Myrtaceae) was analyzed by GC and CG/MS. Forty-four components were identified, representing around 83% of total oil. The major components were α-bisabolol (23.6%) and α-bisabolol oxide B (11.5%). The cytotoxicity of the oil and of a fraction rich in α-bisabolol was tested in vitro against U251 (glioma), UACC-62 (melanoma), MCF-7 (breast), NC1-ADR/RES (ovarian-resistant), 786.0 (kidney), NCI-H460 (lung), PC-3 (prostate), OVCAR-3 (ovarian), HT-29 (colon) and K562 (leukemia) human cancer cells and against VERO (no cancer cell). The oil exhibited antiproliferative activity against all cell lines (TGI < 100 μg/mL), with exception of NCI-H460 cell line (TGI > 125 μg/mL). The highest activity of the oil was observed against U251 (TGI 20.46 μg/mL), 786.0 (TGI 20.74 μg/mL), UACC-62 (TGI 26.98 μg/mL) and PC-3 (TGI 27.63 μg/mL) cell lines. The fraction rich in α-bisabol showed a similar activity profile. It was most active against OVCAR-3 (TGI 8.58 μg/mL) and 786.0 (TGI 8.74 μg/mL). St. Hil. (Magnoliaceae), collected in four seasons, were analyzed by capillary GC and GC/MS. Altogether 52 components were identified. The oils were characterized by predominance of cyclic sesquiterpenes. The main components were linalool, trans-β-guaiene, germacrene D, germacrene B, spathulenol, caryophyllene oxide, viridiflorol and α-eudesmol. The content of individual components was variable during the year. All oils were screened against several strains of bacteria and yeasts, using the agar well-diffusion technique. The antimicrobial activity of oils showed strong dependence with the season. Significant activity was found for oils obtained in the spring and summer.
