Résumé : |
The reinforced concrete pillars of the Church of Santa Maria Annunciata at the San Carlo Borromeo hospital in Milan, designed by the architect Gio Ponti in the early Sixties, show signs of damage due to reinforcement corrosion. They require repair in order to remedy already present damage and also to prevent future propagation. The repair should also aim at preserving the integrity of the original materials, owing to the architectural and cultural value of the Church. The paper describes a trial work aimed at defining an appropriate procedure of restoration. Initially the pillars were inspected to assess their condition by means of non-destructive techniques and analyses on concrete samples. Then the effectiveness of two repair techniques, i.e. electrochemical realkalisation and hydrophobic treatment, was evaluated by comparison with non-treated areas. |
