Concepts of incomeIndex. décimale : Ms01484 Résumé : The theory and measurement of business income occupy a central place in the literature of financial and managerial accounting.
The concept of income has been subject to many controversies and the debate over the fundamental nature of income is still unresolved.
More-over the approaches of economists, accountants and lawyers to the concept of income differ from earch other in several important respects.
Not surprisingly, the lack of agreement over the fundamental nature of income means that there is also lack of agreement over the precise rules for measuring it in complex business conditions.
Because of the importance of the measurement of income in so many everyday affairs, particularly to users of financial reports, extensive and complicated rules for the determination of income have been developed.
However, these rules or methods of valuation often conflict each other.
Consequently, this leads to conflicts in income measurement.
The purpose of this study is to examine some of the major features of the concept of business income with reference to asset valuation bases that have been proposed in the literature, taking into consideration the notion of capital maintenance.
The overall conclusion is that there are many arguments in favour of and in opposition to all of these valuation methods.
Each school claims that its particular valuation method would be more useful than the others.
However, as far as users of financial reports are concerned it seems evident that there is no one measure of income that might be appropriate under all circumstances.
The use of multi-column reporting with several income measures being reported is perhaps the most sensible approach to this problem.Asset valuation and income determination [texte imprimé] / Youcef Brahimi, Auteur ; Maurice W. High voltageIndex. décimale : Ms01886 Résumé : This thesis describes the design and operation of apparatus to repeatedly impulse test SF6-insulated gaps in order to examine the questions of basic performance of gas insulation.
The distinctive feature of impulse voltage testing is that a rapidly rising voltage is applied to a system and results in either a breakdown or a withstand.
When applied to gaseous insulants, impulse voltage measurements produce a wide statistical spread of results so that a large number of votlage applications is necessary to est-ablish reasonable confidence limits on the distribution.
This can be time-consuming.
Microcomputer technology allows a flexible answer to be given to this concept and such a system is described here with particular emphasis on low-cost solution.A computer controlled system for high voltage studies [texte imprimé] / Slimane Rabahallah, Auteur ; B.H. Flow in turbomachinesIndex. décimale : Ms01083 Résumé : A computer program developed by previous M.Sc students (1,2) has been applied to solve the equations governing the steady, inviscid and adiabatic flow on a hub to shroud (S2) streamsurface of the Eckardt centrifugal compressor.
The effects on the relative velocity distributions on the hub and shroud (and thus on the losses in the compressor) of varying the hub, shroud and blade shapes - for the same load on the Compressor - were investigated.
In trying to lessen surface diffusion in the Compressor, it was found that neither the shroud nor the blade shapes have a significant effect on diminishing flow deceleration along the hub and shroud and that only the hub shape need be varied to significantly reduce the diffusion.
A hub shape which leads to a much reduced diffusion than in the original Eckardt Compressor was therefore found by "trial and error".
Finally, a second computer program developed by another M.Sc. student (4), was used to assess the merits of the different designs obtained by varying the hub or shroud or blade shapes over the original design of the Eckardt centrifugal compressor.
This was done by comparing the turbulent boundary layer characteristics (i.e. form factor, displacement thickness, momentum thickness and energy thickness) on the hub and shroud of the compressors.
It was found that the design having a "trial and error hub" can be expected to experience more energy losses but to have a much higher operating flexibility than the original design of the Eckardt compressor.A computer study of surface diffusion on the HUB and shroud of a centrifugal compressor [texte imprimé] / Mahfoud Kadja, Auteur ; C. Solid-state semuconductorIndex. décimale : Ms01285 Résumé : Since their conception, solid-state semuconductor devices have always been regarded as having the potential of high reliability.
This expectation was not diminished by the fact that early devices were characterised by lower lifetimes since it was quickly recognised that the sources of the device failure were the result of the relatively primitive technology.
Research and development in the field of solid-state devices has concerned itself with two important problems.
On one hand we have device physics, whose aim is to understand in terms of basic physical concepts the mode of failure of the various devices.
In this way, one seeks to optimise the high reliability technology in order to achieve the best performance from each device.
The second aspect of this work is to establish a distribution which fits data and gives a very good result.
The objective of this thesis is to identify and investigate various modes of degradation which impair the reliability of the semiconductor devices and fit the log-normal and exponential distributions to the available data, using the least square and maximum likelihood methods for the estimation of the parameters.Degradation failure mode of transistors [texte imprimé] / M. AcousticsIndex. décimale : Ms00885 Résumé : The purpose of this dissertation is to design and construct a magnetoresistive microphone using the magnetoresistive effect.
The aim of the first two chapters is to present a preliminary knowledge about magnetoresistivity, magnetism and acoustics so as to get necessary background to carry out this dissertation.
Although the main purpose of the third chapter has been the design and the construction of the magnetoresistive microphone, the design of the magnet and polepieces covers two thirds of it.
This is due to the fact that the better the design of the magnet and polepieces, the better the magnetoresistive microphone performances.
Futhermore, for every magnet constructed the graph of the magnetoresistance R against displacement x has been plotted and then, the gradient calculated.
The purpose of designing several magnets is to find out the magnet which has the appropriate gradient.
The higher the gradient is, the more sensitive the magnetoresistive microphone will be.
The final chapter has been devoted to the calibration of the microphone using an anechoic chamber.Design and construction of a magnetoresistive microphone [texte imprimé] / Addad, Malik, Auteur ; E. Cohen, Directeur de thèse . - Manchester : [s.n.], 1985 . - 56 f. : ill. ; 30 cm.

Flow measurementIndex. décimale : Ms00983 Résumé : The work presented in this dissertation involves the developement of a mass flow measurement device which can work reliably in typical industrial environment.
The instrument might well be required to operate with different materials, particles sizes, particles shapes, inpurities and changing conveyor gases.
As well as to operate under different transportation conditions of solids loadings and velocity.
Moreover an instrument which is independant of the physical state of the process flow is highly desirable.
A possible solution consists of two measurement.
i/ Solids velocity by cross-correlation technique.
ii/ Rate of flow momentum change by force (F) sensor.
Finally, all our experiments were carried out on a pipe of 5.3 mm of diameter where the air density was of 1.2 Kg/m.Development of a mass flowmeter for a high density/two phase flow [texte imprimé] / Kais Benotmane, Auteur ; C. Pulse dischargeIndex. décimale : Ms01386 Résumé : The work presented in this thesis was undertaken to investigate the phenomena of corona discharges on thin wires under atmospheric conditions.
The first chapter presents a theoretical review which includes the previous experimental work on the subject.
This is followed by descriptions of the apparatus, measuring techniques and the experimental procedure.
The investigation was divided into three phases.
In the first phase, with negative and positive dc voltages applied, the onset corona voltage was recorded along with the glow corona threshold voltage.
Current pulse discharge and mean current values were measured and current-voltage characteristics were established.
The effects of gap length, wire radius and voltage polarity on corona discharge were examined.
A calculation of the electric field is also presented.
All the results are compared to those of previous studies.
In the next stage, involving impulse voltages of 5/5000 µs waveshape, the 50% corona voltage, V50c was studied and compared to the dc onset voltage.
The last stage was concerned with applying higher voltage impulses of different waveshapes, to the wire.
The 50% and the minimum breakdown voltage versus gap -length characteristics were studied.
Comparisons were made between the results obtained using 1/50 µs and 1/2000 µs waveforms. The effects of gap length, and voltage polarity on the breakdown voltages were examined.Discharge phenomena on thin wires in atmospheric air [texte imprimé] / Mabrouk Boumagouda, Auteur ; Aked, Directeur de thèse . - Ecosse : University of Strathclyde, 1986 . - 56 f. : ill. ; 30 cm.

These profit-measures are, absolute profit, return on investment and residual income.
The first chapter analyses the general concepts of divisionalisation - the reasons for divisionalisation, the advantages and disadvantages of divisionalisation and the classification of divisional decisions.
The second chapter is concerned with the establishment of the performance measurement, their merits and some of their particular difficulties.
The next two chapters concentrate on some specific problems of these criteria.
Finally, the last chapter is concerned with some problems common to all divisional profit measures and their impact on profit.
The dissertation's conclusion calls for more research and study to be done in the future, because most of the present criteria used to judge and control the divisional performance are incomplete.Divisional performance : measurement and control [texte imprimé] / Djaffar Kaced, Auteur ; Christopher Cowton, Directeur de thèse . - Pays de Galles : University of Wales, 1984 . - 96 f. : ill. ; 30 cm.

Impeller stageIndex. décimale : Ms00883 Résumé : The overall performance of a 125 mm diameter centrifugal fan was measured and the efficiencies were detrmined for variable flow rates.
The comparatively small size of the fan opened up the possibility that because of low Reynolds number, the internal fluid frictional effects might differ from those predicted by conventional methods.
A set of hydraulic low correlation based on the principle of the kinetic energy defect was derived for the fan geometry.
These expressions together with expressions for the external losses were implemented in a program in order to predict the overall performance.
The effect of the various loss correlations on the overall performance was studied and corrections were made in an attempt to reach agreement between the experimental and calculated performances.Energy losses in centrifugal fans [texte imprimé] / A. Problem Algiers BusIndex. décimale : Ms01685 Résumé : In developing countries, the availability of adequate transport facilities is of considerable importance, the existence of an efficient transport system can be an iportant factor for stimulating economic growth.
In general, the main cities in thee regions are characterised by a rapid growth of population and an important migration from rural areas caused by the unsatisfactory conditions in the rural surroundings and also the pull exerted by potential economic and socieal opportuities existing in an urban center.
As a result, the authorities at a national or local level are faced with the necessity to cope with the demand for transport with the constrains of infrastructure, time and fonancial costs.
In many cases it seems that public transport is viewed as a means of solving urban transport problems.
Buses, wich are the major from of public transport, are subjected to very long traffic congestion delays with all the consequences for the operator on its operations and patronage. So, possible solutions to improvement of transport system have to be sought.
In fact, they are various and one has to think of the most appropriate according to the characteristics of the city and the constrains already given.
One possibility consists in refining the existing system by eliminating some of its weaknesses using bus priority policies.
The policy measure the present study will look at is the implementation of an exclusive busway system.
A busway is a separate track or part of a roadway allocated to the use of bus operation only.Examination of the consequences of introduction of a Bus-Only Road in a major urban area [texte imprimé] / Ouadi, M., Auteur ; John, Mervyn, Directeur de thèse . - Cranfield : [s.n.], 1985 . - 81 f. : ill. ; 30 cm.

Bishop methodIndex. décimale : Ms01284 Résumé : This thesis examine aspects of the alluvial deposits in Somerset, and compare some of the properties of the alluvium in relation to existing theories in Soil Mechanics.
The geology of the Bristol region includes an unusual variety of deposits.
In particular the recent alluvium characterises all aspects of a normally consolidated clay material.
The steep valley sides surrounding the City of Bath are well known for the active superficial landslipping and the second chapter therefore is devoted to studies of the better known theories of slope stability.
The Bishop method is then applied to a field investigation at the Cliffe hotel, Limpley Stoke, where, as a result of a rapid thaw following heavy snowfall a stability failure occurred in the hotel forecourt on a 16° - 18° slope.
Chapter three then presents a summary of Critical State theory originally developed in Cambridge.
The Critical state framework is seen to provide a more complete understanding of a basic soil behaviour.
The fourth chapter applies Critical State to a set of triaxial tests on undisturbed samples from Shepton Mallet, Somerset, where the overall consistency in the test results suggested that Critical State theory could be reasonably applied.
hapters five and six describe the Imperial College stress path cell, together with tests for the determination of the At-Rest coefficient of earth pressure (Ko) and the effective strength parameters on four samples of Somerset alluvium, two other local deposits, and one remoulded London clay.
These tests covered a period of six months.Field and laboratory studies concerning the geotechnical characteristics of some natural deposits around the south-Western region of England [texte imprimé] / Abdelghani Belouar, Auteur ; D.
