An Euler–Euler, volume-of-fluid, multiphase-flow model was used for the three-phase flow simulation. The three-phase flow behaviors in the open and sealed inlet operation modes were investigated under various operating conditions. The location and morphology of the aqueous/organic interface were discussed in detail in light of the simulated pressure distribution. An interesting bistability phenomenon was observed in the simulation. The throughput of the annular centrifugal contactor was obtained from the simulation under various phase ratios and compared with experimental results. Excellent agreement was obtained, supporting the validity of the simulation method. It is important to study reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel from high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) for recovery of nuclear resource and reduction of nuclear waste. Ceramic UO2 pellets of 0.5 mm in diameter for HTR-10 fuel elements were converted into nitrate with N2O4. When the molar ratio of water to uranium was 6, the conversion efficiency was above 99% after 180 min at 80 °C, and the conversion product was a mixture of UO2(NO3)2·3H2O and UO2(NO3)2·6H2O. When ceramic UO2 pellets were transformed to U3O8 powder with a particle size below 100 μm under an O2 stream and high temperature, the U3O8 powder was quickly converted into nitrate with N2O4 within 45 min. Water showed a significant effect on the reaction of U3O8 powder with N2O4, whereas other operation conditions had little effect on the reaction. Note générale : Génie Mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Actinides Fission reactor fuel reprocessing Radioactive waste processing Rare earth metals Sustainable development Index. décimale : 620.1 Essais des matériaux. Défauts des matériaux. Protection des matériaux Résumé : Reprocessing of used nuclear fuel and nuclear waste management are important issues for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. It is necessary to develop novel nuclear waste treatment technologies to meet the goal of minimizing the secondary liquid waste. Supercritical fluids are considered green solvents in chemical engineering process. Moreover, extraction of metal ions by supercritical fluid is achieved. It gains growing interest to treat nuclear waste using supercritical fluid extraction recently because it can greatly decrease the secondary liquid waste with high radioactivity. During the past 2 decades, extraction of actinides and lanthanides by supercritical fluid has been intensively studied in many countries, and many important progresses have been made. However, the prospect of industrial application of supercritical fluid extraction technology in nuclear waste management is still unclear. In this paper, extraction of actinides and lanthanides from various matrices or from their oxides by supercritical fluid including the experimental results, extraction mechanism, and kinetic process was reviewed. The engineering demonstration projects were introduced. The trend of industrial application of supercritical fluid extraction technology in nuclear waste management was also discussed.
