Adsorption at solid interfaces is a most important process regulating the activities of organic solute molecules in natural aquatic systems.
Amphiphilic substances (i. e. substances containing both a hydrophobic and a hydrophilic part) like fatty acids can adsorb on polar and on nonpolar surfaces. The adsorptive behavior of different aliphatic fatty acids was studied as a function of their hydrophobic properties, system pH and of the type of adsorbing surface. The hanging mercury drop electrode was used as a model of a nonpolar surface. It offers a smooth, reproducible and renewable surface. The replacement of water molecules by organic compounds leads to a decrease of the differential capactiance at the water/electrode-interface. This effect was determined polarographically by using phase selective alternating current (AC) polarography. |
