This dissertation aims to emphasise the need for planning the introduction or expansion of containerisation carefully and systematically.
After two decades of technical and managerial experience, a number of crucial areas and methods related to containerisation, need to be reviewed in line with the emergence of the intermodal transportation concept. The segmented planning approach followed in the past, is recognised to be one of the major deficiencies and reasons for a low level of performance. In contrast, the intermodal approach not only aims to increase efficiency and reduce costs but will bring the necessary adaptation to the new trades and transport practices. The planning of the different modes of transport and their supports, has, consequntly to be considered on a comprehensive. |
