Titre : Computational design of polymer nanocomposite coatings: a multiscale hierarchical approach for barrier property prediction Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jie Xiao, Auteur ; Yinlun Huang, Auteur ; Charles W. Manke, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : pp 7718–7727 Note générale : Chimie industrielle Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Polymer Nanocomposite Coatings. Résumé : In the development of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs), computational prediction of material properties is of great advantages in achieving rational and cost-effective design. This paper introduces a new multiscale hierarchical approach specifically tailored for PNCs property prediction. Due to its distinct features of generality and comprehensiveness, the introduced methodology outperforms most existing computational methods in this area. By this methodology, a wide range of PNCs containing any-shaped nanoparticles dispersed in a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer matrix can be thoroughly investigated for multiple property prediction. Furthermore, a reliable prediction is promoted by a systematic consideration of the intrinsic multiscale hierarchical structure of PNCs. Most importantly, an effective integration of different methods and theories at individual scales offers unique opportunities for gaining in-depth scientific understandings on the molecular structural origin of macroscopic property enhancement. Titre : Hybrid Genetic Algorithm: A Robust Parameter Estimation Technique and its Application to Heavy Duty Vehicles Titre original : Algorithme Génétique Hybride : Une technique robuste d'évaluation de paramètre et son application aux véhicules résistants Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jie Xiao, Auteur ; Kulakowski, Bohdan, Auteur Année de publication : 2006 Article en page(s) : 523-531 p. Note générale : Génie Mécanique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Technique Hybrid Acquisition de donnée Imperfection Simulation Résumé : In this paper, hybrid parameter estimation technique is developed to improve computational efficiency and accuracy of pure GA-based estimation. The proposed strategy integrates a GA and the Maximum Likelihood Estimation. Choices of input signals and estimation criterion are discussed involving an extensive sensitivity analysis. Experiment-related aspects, such as the imperfection of data acquisition, are also considered. Computer simulation results reveal that the hybrid parameter estimation method proposed in this study is very efficient and clearly outperforms conventional techniques and pure GAs in accuracy, efficiency, as well as robustness with respect to the initial guesses and measurement uncertainty. Primary experimental validation is also implemented, including the interpretation of field test data, as well as analysis of errors associated with aspects of experiment design.

Titre : Technology Integration for Sustainable Manufacturing : An Applied Study on Integrated Profitable Pollution Prevention in Surface Finishing Systems Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Jie Xiao, Auteur ; Yinlun Huang, Auteur Année de publication : 2012 Article en page(s) : pp. 11434-11444 Note générale : Industrial chemistry Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Pollution prevention Manufacturing Résumé : Technology improvement and innovation are of utmost importance in achieving greenness while ensuring economic incentives in manufacturing. Aiming at Profitable Pollution Prevention (P3), design and operation technologies can be developed to enhance manufacturing sustainability through energy and material efficiency increment, source waste reduction, production efficiency improvement, safety assurance, etc. This paper explores opportunities for an effective integration of P3-oriented technologies in a systematic way. It will be shown that the integrated P3 (IP3) technology can be identified through a technology implementation approach based on process fundamentals and engineering practicability needed for process design modification and operational strategy development. A successful application of an IP3 technology in an electroplating process, a main type of surface finishing system, demonstrates the methodological efficacy.
