Thirty six compounds have been identified representing more than 90% of the total oil. The main constituents of the oil were found to be γ-terpinene (12.9%) and β-bisabolene (12.2%). Other representative compounds of the oil were identified as germacrene D (7.6%), myrcene (7.3%), β-caryophyllene (7.0%), limonene (6.0%) and α-humulene (5.1%). The sesquiterpene fraction (56.9%) was predominant in the oil of this species; most of these were hydrocarbons (52.9%). This is the first published study outlining the chemical composition of this Australian species. The essential oil composition was very complex. A total of 94 compounds have been identified, all of which with percentage compositions lower than 10%. The main constituents of the oil were identified as borneol (8.8%), cis-β-guaiene (5.9%), myrcene (5.4%), limonene (5.2%), β-oplopenone (4.7%) and β-pinene (4.5%). Monoterpene and sesquiterpene compounds were present in similar amounts in the oil (37.0% and 35.3%, respectively). Most monoterpenes were hydrocarbons (20.1%) while in the sesquiterpene fraction was predominated by oxygenated compounds (22.6%). A new possible bejarol isomers and a bejarol derivative have been detected in low amounts. All the samples were characterized by a high percentage of sesquiterpenes while monoterpenes were totally absent. Most of the differences detected in the flower oils (SF) were quantitative, although small qualitative ones were also found. The principal compounds of the winter leaf oils (WL) were identified as zingiberene (14.8%), aromadendrene (10.6%), ar-curcumene (10.6%) and guaiol (6.5%), whereas the oil from the spring leaves (SL) contained as main constituents aromadendrene (9.2%), ar-curcumene (8.8%), zingiberene (8.0%) and guaiol (7.0%). The flower oils also contained these components but the major ones were found to be α-cadinol (8.4%) and zingiberene (8.1%). The seeds of this species were the part of the plant with less yield oil. As far as we know, this is the first report about the seasonal variation on the chemical composition of the oil of this species isolated by hydrodistillation and analyzed by GC and GC/MS.
