FillIndex. décimale : D006685 Résumé : The soil-structure interaction problem of strip footings on fill and stone columns has been investigated.
Full scale tests were performed on a derelict site to examine the effectiveness of vibro ground treatment by vertical stone columns.
Immediate, intermediate and long term behaviour of the strips has been examined through the use of a designed geotechnical instrumentation scheme.
Measured foundation parameters included: surface settlement, bending strains and contact pressure along the strips together with the distribution of vertical ground movement with depth, and the increase in horizontal earth pressure around the columns.
The treated ground consisted of a granular ash fill underlain by a soft silty cohesive soil which is in turn underlain by a glacial till.
It should be noted that fill is known to be major source of concern to geotechnical design engineers and builders.
Site investigation included the use of trial pits, dynamic probing, shell and auger boreholes, geophysics and plate bearing tests on fill and stone columns.
An extensive soil laboratory testing programme was performed.
The geotechnical assessment included a detailed soil description, classification tests, on dimensional consolidation tests using the Rowe cell and the oedometer, triaxial stress path and direct shear tests.
Soil design parameters have been derived from these different techniques and are compared.
The installation of selected stone columns through the use of the vibrodisplacement dry technique was instrumented and their effectiveness is controlled through the use of quality control tests: plate tests, geophysics and dynamic probing.
This has been followed by numerical analyses which included:
- Simulation of plate bearing tests on single granular columns installed in soft clays and poor granular fills through the use of elasto-plastic two dimensional finite element soil models
The results are compared with those obtained from modern design methods which are reviewed and discussed.
- Simulation of full scale tests of strip footings on fill and stone columns using a three dimensional analysis.
The analyses included elastic and non linear elasto-plastic solutions.
Computer results were obtained from the use of both the finite element method as an entity and a combined boundary-finite element method and are compared to the measured ones.
The relevance of soil parameters obtained from different techniques is discussed.
Many aspects of soil-structure interaction have been considered.
The main conclusion has been to demonstrate that it is not always necessary to design strip footings founded on stone columns as continuous beams as recommended in the NHBC guidance notes. The behaviour of strip footings on stone columns [texte imprimé] / Ahmed Saadi, Auteur ; L.
