Résumé : |
An experimental inverstigation was carried out in an 11-liter glass jar, with ignition at the center for measurement of the spark ignition energy and lean flammability limit of methane-air mixtures at subatmospheric pressures and room temperatures.
The mixture composition was established by the partial pressure method and checked by gas chromatography and gas absorption.
The optimum range of spark duration was determined and found to be in the range of 60 µsec to 120 µsec.
The ignition criteria was chosen as the visual observation of flame propagation at least once in 50 spark firings.
The electrode distance was changed over a range of 2 mm to 10 mm in order to obtain the optimum distance that yields minimum values of ignition energies.
It was found that the optimum distance depends on the fuel concentration and the initial pressure.
The apparent flammability limit of methane was also found to be dependent on the electrode distance.
Absolute limits of flammability were determined for four initial pressures of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 atm.
These limits were obtained inside the range of electrode distances that yielded minimum values of ignition energy.
The determined limits were found to be unaffected by further increase of the electrode distance.
The effect of the initial pressure on both the ignition energy and the flammability limit was also determined. |
