Experimental measurements for the flow of shear thinning inelastic non-Newtonian liquids and some industrial coating solutions through the nip of two CO- and counter-rotating rolls of various size and speed have been carried out.
Results are presented in a dimensionless form for the total volumetric flux through the nip and for the distribytion of this flux between the two rolls.
These results were found to be in good agreement with the correlations developed by previous workers.
Also, a semi-theoretical method is presented which allows estimates to be made of the forces exerted on the rolls and the power required to drive the rolls in both forward and reverse roll coating processes.
The analysis involves a simplified equation of motion based on the lubrication approximations.
Finally, an experimental method which permits pressure measurement through the nip is described. |
