When loaded, laminate of this type is usually regarded as subjected to a two dimensional stress system.
In design, it is the stresses or strains in the plane of the laminate only which are considered for strength purposes.
Certain aspects of stress systems in pipes under pressure, and pipe bends under flexure suggest that the through-thickness distributions of the laminate need to be considered.
This is because when bending of the wall of the pipe occurs (as for instance when a pipe bend ovalises), it is normally assumed that simple bending stress thery applies as for a homogeneous material.
To ascertain this, simple bending tests on stips of flat sheet laminate were carried out to see whether the simple bending assumptions were reasonable.
The laminate was constructed from polyester resin and E glass in the form of chopped strand mat.
Some tests to destruction on the same material were carried out to provide material data for work on pipes in this material.Strain distribution through the thickness of glass reinforced laminates under bending loads [texte imprimé] / Mohamed Tahraoui, Auteur ; R.
