Dispositifs semi-conducteurs Résumé : In this paper, we introduce the quantization index hierarchy, which is used for efficient coding of quantized wavelet and wavelet packet coefficients.
A hierarchical classification map is defined in each wavelet subband, which describes the quantized data through a series of index classes.
Going from bottom to the top of the tree, neighboring coefficients are combined to form classes that represent some statistics of the quantization indices of these coefficients.
Higher levels of the tree are constructed iteratively by repeating this class assignment to partition the coefficients into larger subsets.
The class assignments are optimized using a rate-distortion cost analysis.
The optimized tree is coded hierarchically from top to bottom by coding the class membership information at each level of the tree.
Context-adaptive arithmetic coding is used to improve coding efficiency.
The developed algorithm produces PSNR results that are better than the state-of-art wavelet-based and wavelet packet-based coders in literature.DEWEY : 361.382 ISSN : 0923-5965 En ligne : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=PublicationURL&_tockey=%23TOC%235640%23 [...] [article] Hierarchical quantization indexing for wavelet and wavelet packet image coding [texte imprimé] / Hasan F. Dispositifs semi-conducteurs Résumé : JPEG 2000 and HD Photo (JPEG XR) enable the coding of images with several adaptivity provisions.
These provisions allow taking into account the constraints of diverse usage environments.
However, the actual adaptation of the coded bitstreams requires additional system complexity.
This paper investigates how JPEG 2000 and HD Photo can be used in a standardized and XML-based framework for format-independent content adaptation in the compressed domain.
An analysis is provided of the cost of providing adaptivity in the compressed domain, in terms of loss of coding efficiency, as well as in terms of the complexity of the format-agnostic adaptation system used.
This complexity is expressed in terms of execution times, memory consumption, and file size overhead of the XML descriptions.
Using the outcome of our analysis, a number of improvements are proposed that allow reducing the complexity of XML-based adaptation for JPEG 2000 and HD Photo, in particular the use of compact XML descriptions and an adaptation chain based on the Simple API for XML (SAX).
Compact XML descriptions contain a minimal amount of information for the purpose of adaptation—their use is enabled by introducing an additional lightweight pre- and post-processing step in the overall adaptation chain.
Our results show that editing-style operations on JPEG 2000 and HD Photo bitstreams can be executed with a feasible complexity when relying on compact XML descriptions.
These editing-style operations include exploiting spatial and quality scalability, as well as interactive extraction of regions-of-interest (ROIs).
However, low-level operations in the compressed domain, such as rotating an image, cannot be supported, due to the need for entropy decoding and data reordering at macroblock or codeblock level.DEWEY : 361.382 ISSN : 0923-5965 En ligne : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=PublicationURL&_tockey=%23TOC%235640%23 [...] [article] Improved BSDL-based content adaptation for JPEG 2000 and HD Photo (JPEG XR) [texte imprimé] / Wesley De Neve, Auteur ; Davy Van Deursen, Auteur ; Wim Van Lancker, Auteur . - pp. 452-467.

Titre : Introducing skip mode in distributed video coding Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Stefaan Mys, Auteur ; Jürgen Slowack, Auteur ; Jozef Škorupa, Auteur Article en page(s) : pp. 200-213 Note générale : Electronique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Distributed video coding Wyner–Ziv coding Skip mode Coding efficiency Index. décimale : 621.382 Dispositifs électroniques utilisant les effets des corps solides. Dispositifs semi-conducteurs Résumé : Although it was proven in the 1970s already by Wyner and Ziv and Slepian and Wolf that, under certain conditions, the same rate–distortion boundaries exist for distributed video coding (DVC) systems as for traditional predicting systems, until now no practical DVC system has been developed that even comes close to the performance of state-of-the-art video codecs such as H.264/AVC in terms of rate–distortion.
Some important factors for this are the lower accuracy of the motion estimation performed at the decoder, the inaccurate modeling of the correlation between the side information and the original frame, and the absence in most state-of-the-art DVC systems of anything conceptually similar to the notion of skipped macroblocks in predictive coding systems.
This paper proposes an extension of a state-of-the-art transform domain residual DVC system with an implementation of skip mode.
The skip mode has an impact at two different places: in the turbo decoder, more specifically the soft input, soft output (SISO) convolutional decoder, and in the puncturing of the parity bits.
Results show average bitrate gains up to 39% (depending on the sequence) achieved by combining both approaches.
Furthermore, a hybrid video codec is presented where the motion estimation task is shifted back to the encoder.
This results in a drastic increase in encoder complexity, but also in a drastic performance gain in terms of rate–distortion, with average bitrate savings up to 60% relative to the distributed video codec.
In the hybrid video codec, smaller but still important average bitrate gains are achieved by implementing skip mode: up to 24%.DEWEY : 361.382 ISSN : 0923-5965 En ligne : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=PublicationURL&_tockey=%23TOC%235640%23 [...] [article] Introducing skip mode in distributed video coding [texte imprimé] / Stefaan Mys, Auteur ; Jürgen Slowack, Auteur ; Jozef Škorupa, Auteur . - pp. 200-213.

Titre : Iterative joint source–channel decoding of H.264 compressed video Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : David Levine, Auteur ; William E. Lynch, Auteur ; Tho Le-Ngoc, Auteur Année de publication : 2010 Article en page(s) : pp. 75-87 Note générale : Electronique Langues : Anglais (eng) Mots-clés : Error resilience Joint source–channel decoding Likelihood decoding Compressed video H.264 Index. décimale : 621.382 Dispositifs électroniques utilisant les effets des corps solides. Dispositifs semi-conducteurs Résumé : This paper proposes an Iterative Joint Source–Channel Decoding (IJSCD) scheme for error resilient transmission of H.264 compressed video over noisy channels by using the available H.264 compression, e.g., Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coding (CABAC), and channel coding, i.e., rate-1/2 Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) code, in transmission.
At the receiver, the turbo decoding concept is explored to develop a joint source–channel decoding structure using a soft-in soft-out channel decoder in conjunction with the source decoding functions, e.g., CABAC-based H.264 semantic verification, in an iterative manner.
Illustrative designs of the proposed IJSCD scheme for an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel, including the derivations of key parameters for soft information are discussed.
The performance of the proposed IJSCD scheme is shown for several video sequences.
In the examples, for the same desired Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), the proposed IJSCD scheme offers a savings of up to 2.1 dB in required channel Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) as compared to a system using the same RSC code alone.

The complexity of the proposed scheme is also evaluated.
As the number of iterations is controllable, a tradeoff can be made between performance improvement and the overall complexity.DEWEY : 361.382 ISSN : 0923-5965 En ligne : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=PublicationURL&_tockey=%23TOC%235640%23 [...] Joint video/depth rate allocation for 3D video coding based on view synthesis distortion model / Yanwei Liu in Signal processing. Dispositifs semi-conducteurs Résumé : Joint video/depth rate allocation is an important optimization problem in 3D video coding.
To address this problem, this paper proposes a distortion model to evaluate the synthesized view without access to the captured original view.
The proposed distortion model is an additive model that accounts for the video-coding-induced distortion and the depth-quantization-induced distortion, as well as the inherent geometry distortion.
Depth-quantization-induced distortion not only considers the warping error distortion, which is described by a piecewise linear model with the video power spectral property, but also takes into account the warping error correlation distortion between two sources reference views.
Geometry distortion is approximated from that of the adjacent view synthesis.
Based on the proposed distortion model, a joint rate allocation method is proposed to seek the optimal trade-off between video bit-rate and depth bit-rate for maximizing the view synthesis quality.
Experimental results show that the proposed distortion model is capable of approximately estimating the actual distortion for the synthesized view, and that the proposed rate allocation method can almost achieve the identical rate allocation performance as the full-search method at less computational cost.
Moreover, the proposed rate allocation method consumes less computational cost than the hierarchical-search method at high bit-rates while providing almost the equivalent rate allocation performance.DEWEY : 361.382 ISSN : 0923-5965 En ligne : http://www.sciencedirect.com/science?_ob=PublicationURL&_tockey=%23TOC%235640%23 [...] [article] Joint video/depth rate allocation for 3D video coding based on view synthesis distortion model [texte imprimé] / Yanwei Liu, Auteur ; Qingming Huang, Auteur ; Siwei Ma, Auteur . - pp. 666-681.
